Hmmmm, 1982, eh ? Reagan left the country in a mess in 1982 ?

    That's just silly.

No, I said unemployment hit the highest point since the great depression in 1982 which was a whopping double digit 10.8%...

And Reagan, my good Sir, was at the wheel...

Not only that, Reagan did exactly what he claimed to be against. He grew the size of government and increased the national debt.

No. You said Reagan left the country a mess, then put up a stat from '82 to prove it.

    Yes, that is silly.

No, I put the stat from 82 to prove popularity doesn't equal good president.

However, if you want to use that standard then I guess Obama is a great president heading into office since he has a 78% approval rating.

I haven't said anything about Obama since the election. Reaching, always reaching. And it doesn't even make sense.

And if you were in the military during the Carter, Reagan transition, chances are you will always think Reagan was a great president.

Nope, but I did. I said if we're going to use popularity as a standard for presidents then so far Obama is going to be great.

I was in from 12/16/80 to 12/16/92. I didn't think so highly of the Reagan days since I had to send most of my check home to support the family. Dad's Church struggled so bad in those days he had to take a second job plus put use the money I sent home to keep the family off the streets. Reagan did give the military pay increases and new equipment but when you simultaneously cut taxes you raise the deficit. Can't make everybody happy.

Reagan was popular AS president. We've yet to see if the zero will remain popular.

I grew up dirt poor, as well, and was happy to help my 6 brothers & sisters, while my dad worked 2 jobs. It was hard to make ends meet with Carter as president, with that big family, gas prices, inflation....etc. When I joined, most of my check went to help them. I kept sending them money, because even as a popular president, Reagan still made us pay our bills. I'm sorry you have such bitterness for having to help out.

My bitterness is not in helping out, in fact I counted it a blessing to be able to help.

I'm just saying I am not of the camp who believes Reganomics was all that great.

Now if you want to discuss Carter, those were even tougher times with record breaking inflation but he inherited that from Ford (you know, from the Hoover party). Carter raised interest rates to 21% which was not popular at the time but is now credited for slowing inflation.
