ESPN has been having a tournament to determine who is the greatest college basketball team of all time. People vote on line and by text messaging.

    The final four was:

96 Kentucky vs. 82 North Carolina

    76 Indiana vs. 69 UCLA

    The finals:

76 Indiana vs. 82 North Carolina

I don't think that list is complete without either the 73 or 74 NC State Wolfpack.

They were 27-0 in 73 and then 30-1 in 74 with a national title. They beat UCLA in the semis.

Oh... when I was at NC State many moons ago, it was rumored that Jordan was strongly considered State over UNC until the media started hyping him as the next David Thompson. He didn't want to play in Thompson's shadow.

did not know that about NC State. 27-0 and 30-1. I just checked on ESPN and UNC wins the tournamnet as the best team ever. It had to be the high shorts.

High shorts plus the media hype around that team. How many times have we seen the footage of Jordan draining the game-winner in the 82 championship game?

The 75 IU team also lost only 1 game, the regional final to Kentucky after Scott May had a broken leg late in the season. After they won the 76 title, Knight was quoted as saying, "Shoulda won two."

The 75 and 76 IU teams plus some of the UCLA teams were the greatest of all time in my mind. I think those IU teams would have shut down the 82 Carolina team.

How do you go 27-0 and not win a National Title?

No way that the '82 Carolina team in better than the '74 N.C. State team. Carolina is picked here because they have Michael Jordan and James Worthy. Both went on to great NBA careers and Jordan is, hands down, the greatest basketball player ever. Those later NBA facts are being read back into their college career. '82 Carolina was a great team, no doubt, but their accomplishments pale in comparison to '74 NCSU.

73-74 NCSU lost ONE game in two seasons and defeated Maryland in the 74 ACC championship game (In fact Maryland might be considered the greatest team in the history of college basketball--except they lost this game to NCSU, a game considered by many to be the best college game ever played, and thus Maryland was not eligible to go to the NCAA's) and defeated the UCLA dynasty to win the national championship.

I realize there is little similarity over the game today and what it was with UK's Fabulous Five, and before, but what about a team that hasn't even gotten a nod, for its day. LIU from about 1935-41 had two undefeated seasons in this string. I do think that the nod might have to go to the UCLA Bruins over the nearly three-year winning streak. Although I seriously doubt that team could make it through half a season undefeated, now, because the game has changed that much.
