Hard to believe - stationed at Griffiss almost 60 years ago - 1961 thru 1963 2856th ABW right next to the SAC barracks.

I thought Griffiss shut down long ago? I was up at Plattsburg a few years back and other than no security posts it still looked like an AF base to me. I could see all the same buildings that existed at every place I was at - fire station, administrative buildings etc. and boy did it bring back the memories.

Yes, Griffith did shut down - at least 95% of it back in 1995. Post-closure, two USAF activities remained: the Rome Research Site of the Air Force Research Laboratory, and the Eastern Air Defense Sector (EADS) of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) as operated by the New York Air National Guard from a small complex of buildings in the Technology Park. DFAC also is located.
At that area - there is a sign that states "You are entering a United States Air Force insilation"
The PX is located in this general area.
Lots of new constrution -for the new businesss

The Grif is a lot different! There's two or three round-abouts or whatever they call those traffic circle things, a glut of new hotels, restaurants and businesses all over the place.

I stopped in at the PX the other day. She told me that a lot of Reserve troops and even units from Ft Drum, will come to Griffiths for training excersies.
