Chris is my youngest. He is seventeen, profoundly retarded from encephalitis when he was three, and also autistic. As the clock nears the 29th here on the west coast, and I am holding him up waiting for his sister to call me to get picked up from a football game, I look at him, sitting on the floor, rocking with his purple stuffed Barney which sings, time after time,

    I love you
    You love me
    We're a happy family
    With a great big hug
And a kiss from me to you
Won't you say you love me, too?

Yes, I love him. So much. And we are a happy family. He's got great hugs and claps to music. He doesn't know it's his birthday, but he loves the song "Happy Birthday," and will sing it ("ya ya ya ya....") over and over again for a few days until Barney re-exerts his superiority.

My mom is not a Christian. She figures Chris is not even really human. No one really remembers him unless he's the reason I can't go out or something.

So I'm sharing it here, if you don't mind. It's my son's birthday tomorrow. No one thought he would live this long.

Happy 17th Birthday, my dear son, Christopher!

    Thanks for indulging me, folks.

    Helen

Thanks for sharing that beautiful testimony with us Helen! The Lord is blessing you for your love and faithfulness!

My wife's older brother had a beautiful baby girl who's spinal cord was hurt during delivery and she became crippled and retarded for the rest of her life. She died a few years ago at the age of 42. But the parents cared for that child, and she was the entire world to them. What a dedication, what love, it can only come from God. So, our heart goes out to you and we celebrate with your son, Christopher, wishing him a Happy Birthday in the Lord. May He bless you and your family and continue to uphold you in His loving care. Love in Christ, Barnabas (for the BB) [IMG]

It takes a very special and loving person to care for the needs of disabled children. It sounds like the Lord gave you a very big heart and a special blessing in more ways than one! Happy Birthday Indeed, Christopher! ;)
