A sinner would pray this praying when they are convicted by the Holy Spirit of their sins and their need for Jesus Christ as personal Saviour and Lord. The prayer from the heart will surely save them

Just want to make it more than just something to fall back upon, as one needs to have a real encounter with risen Jesus !

Does prayer save them? Or does Christ save them?

Cans someone be saved even if they never say a "sinners prayer"?

I think that is the heart of the issue. It is possible to say a prayer, and maybe even think you mean it because it is such an emotional experience, and yet never really had your heart changed from a heart of stone to a heart of flesh. But then go for the rest of your life thinking you've "been saved" because you said a prayer at some point.

God does the saving not our prayer. Romans 10:13. Verse 14, "How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed?" see 1 John 5:9-13. John 6:47. John 1:12-13.

Probably many have been convicted to admit done wrong, done bad sinning, and yet never really trust in the Lord Jesus, as they had an emotional release and felt much better!

By Faith through Grace. We come to faith in Christ our heart is changed from a heart of stone to a heart of flesh which causes our affections to change. We are saved when we come to faith and then we live out our faith by our words (what we say) and actions (what we do).

We live as new creations in Christ. Which is a life of confession, repentance, love, worship, obedience, giving, serving, prayer, hope, and seeking His Kingdom and His righteousness (plus a bunch of other stuff).

Believe that one is a sinner, cannot do anything but submit and trust in Lord Jesus to save them from their sin!

What about Peters words in Acts 2.38 in response to verse 37?

No it is not irrelevant. The call to believe and repent is the call to have faith. It is the call to not only believe but to surrender yourself to Christ. Faith isn't just intellectual belief. It is trust. So much trust that it changes you from the inside out. Any claim of faith that doesn't include "believe and repent" isn't a saving faith.

Says who? Are you suggesting that what Peter told these thousands doesn't apply to others. This is not correct

So repentance and faith is required before the sinner can be saved

No, rather suggesting that they were the ones that wanted to see Jesus crucified , and so peter address them to repent of that sin and turn to their Messiah now!
