I've been through two "tsunamis" in Hawaii. Both were absolutely nothing. People were trying to surf it, but were disappointed when they couldn't, because it wasn't big enough.

Here in NZ the Eastern coast has been notified. Several families in the Chatham Islands headed for higher ground but the swells were moderate. The PacificOcean has an advance warning alert for other areas, but the Indian Ocean does not. Why would people want to surf one? There is so much rubbish amongst it, it would be evolution of the stupid, me thinks!

I've done it in Hawaii. There was no rubbish in the waves. Woody is right that the waves aren't big but you can use a long board for a nice long ride.

Yes but with an actual tsunami which are very very fast, you would be swept inshore picking up trees, ships, homes people as you go. And even if you did, you would be a target for terrified drowning people. Still seems incredibly daft to me!

Well yes but we aren't talking an Indonesian sized Tsunami here. The couple we saw in Hawaii were pretty benign.
