perhaps I am confused on the details, but I still think the KJV is quite accurate -- if you understand the old timey words they use.

Thank you for having an Avatar -- I did not know you could do that here -- I uploaded a low resolution pic of myself from when I was a bit younger when I was in college.

Sorry, I do not claim a favorite English translation.

Gee, I go out of the country for a week and this thread turns into a KJV issue thread.

It's so nice to go and minister in another country where they don't have these kind of silly issues.

i will just say i am not fond of the NLT. i find the NIV to be so easy to read that i really don't see the need to simplify things even more. just my opinion, of course. :)

think that as long as we are aware of what its was designed to do...

To be a bible version for those just saved, or english second language, its does the job!

I do like to use it to read devotionally, its just that seems quite often the 'freerer' renderings kind of stick out....

indeed. i do see where it would be helpful to use the NLT for many of the difficult passages (e.g. in the Old Testament books).

Personally I think the NLTse did itself a bit of a disservice by continuing with the NLT name. I am not a fan of the first edition NLT and even less of a fan of the old Living Bible. Now while I still refer to my NASB usually for in depth study, the NLTse has become a translation I reach for simple reading. I strongly suspect if they released the NLTse as some other name we wouldn't have as many people discount it as another paraphrased translation.

Every time I read the NLT, I wonder what I am getting.....so I read the same chapters over again in the NASB or something else literal. I don't trust the NLT

agreed. i think it's really interesting how so many people attack the NIV for not being "literal" enough, when it's so much more literal than the NLT!

Just from reading them, would say NLT/NIV/HCSB would go from least to more literal!

i agree with your assessment. all three of those translations have "grown on me" over time.

and i really respect the efforts of the translation teams on all three aforementioned versions.

i have opened my mind to the fact that a translation that is less "literal" can, in some ways, actually be more accurate.

Would say that a more literal version would be closer to what was said, but less formal one sometimes allows us to get better what was meant!
