    Hey Guys!

I am beginning preparation for teaching a series on spiritual gifts, and would appreciate any input you can give regarding good study and teaching resources on the subject. Can you suggest some good literature or tools to help believers in discovering their own spiritual gifts?

I will also be addressing the issue of gifts like prophecy and speaking in tongues and the whole cessationist vs. non-cessationist debate, so any suggested resources on these issues would be appreciated as well.

If you can find an older book by John F. Walvoord, who was president of Dallas Theological Seminary, titled: The Holy Spirit, you will find helpful information about the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

He is a Presbyterian and a staunch Dispensationalist, but otherwise sound on the Holy Spirit and gifts.

My copy is 1954 and was printed by Zondervan.....wow, it cost me $8.95

    Cheers,

    Jim

Thanks for the input so far, gentlemen! This is a pretty big issue to tackle, and I want to do as thorough a study as I can.

I assume you have considered MacArthur's book, "Charismatic Chaos." Any study on spiritual gifts must include the sign gifts whose function and existence have long since passed off the scene ... unbeknownst to some ...

Here are some of the books I have read or am reading so far:

The Holy Spirit by Sinclair Ferguson

God's Empowering Presence by Gordon Fee

Perspectives on Pentecost by Richard Gaffin

The Gift of Prophecy in the New Testament and Today by Wayne Grudem

Are Miraculous Gifts for Today? edited by Wayne Grudem

    Showing the Spirit By D.A.Carson

Keep in Step With the Spirit by J.I.Packer

    Spiritual Gifts by Bobby Clinton

    Charismatic Chaos by John MacArthur

I am obviously interested in studying all sides of the issue and thus welcome input from all sides. What I have been lacking in especially, however, are more practical books or tools for aiding Christians in identifying their particular gifts.

    Thanks again!

    Pastor Larry,

I frankly found MacArthur's Charismatic Chaos to be a disappointment. I think Gaffin's Persectives on Pentecost is probably the best thing I have seen so far from a cessationist point of view.

    Dr. Bob,

The resources you listed look to be especially practical. I intend to get both.

    Pastork,

As an aside from your topic, I was born in Bloomington, ILL. I lived in the twin cities until I left for college. I am not familiar with your church. I was saved at Calvary Baptist in Normal in 1965. ;)

An excellent book in the spiritual gifts is a book by Dr. Earle E. Matteson called "The Biblical Plan for Power." He is a fundamental Baptist, former pastor and former Director of the New Testatment Association, but now retired. His address is: Matteson Ministries
    2979 Robb Circle
    Lakewood, CO 80215

He was raised in a pentecostal home and then became by conviction a fundamental Baptist and has been a noted leader among our movement. His book is a classic on the gifts. [IMG]

    Circuitrider,

Immanuel Baptist was started about 17-18 years ago. It originally met in the Western Avenue Community Center, but purchased its current building from Vale Baptist Church about 12-13 years ago. I have been serving here for 9 1/2 years. I am their second pastor. We are currently unaffiliated, having left the Baptist General Conference for doctrinal reasons about 3 years ago. We are Reformed in theology with elder leadership.

    Thank you for the input.
