Girdle? That's interesting. That would be the older meaning, though, I am sure...

I just looked it up in a couple of concordances. The word used is k'thoneth
    or kutonet.

It simply means 'to cover.' It is used only 29 times in the Old Testament and is translated variously as "robe, tunic, garment, coat, covering."

Thus the length is not part of the meaning of the word. For instance, the word is used in Nehemiah 7:70 and 72 to simply refer to priestly garments. Exodus 28:4 it is also translated simply as garment in the King James, and as tunic in other modern versions.

Something I noticed with 'new' eyes just now, though, and I had to smile -- Adam and Eve SEWED their fig leaves together. I'm always surprised by the number of people who seem to think that Adam and Eve were simply glorified cave people! They were probably much more civilized and learned than we are, simply because they only had one Teacher, and He was inerrant, could give them knowledge immediately, and knew it all. What a way to go!

Helen, I look up the meanings of a lot of words, but how do I look up other ways it was translated in the bible like that? I must be missing something.

LOL, the NIV Concordance gives all the different ways it translates the word. So I have to use two concordances. The Strongs gives me the root word and basic meaning and the NIV gives me all the ways they use the word.

So for that word, when it said, for instance, 'tunic' as one of the translations, I went back to the main part of the Concordance and looked up 'tunic' and looked for the number in the reference number column that matched the word I was looking for. Then, finding the verse they used it in that way, I would switch back tot he King James to see what THEY did with it in that particular verse. One gets some very interesting insights into the heads of the translators this way! [IMG]

At any rate, it does take two Concordances and a little determination and time.

If you don't have those two concordances (and they do tend to be pricey), PM or email me the word you are interested in and I'll get the stuff on it for you and email you back.

I don't understand why you posted what you did here. I did not attack you nor was this thread aimed at you or anyone else. I am sorry for you because you try to convince people that you do not believe these things are part of your salvation but you exhibit an attitude just like Pentecostals do when someone disagrees with you you become disagreeable and want to attack others.

This is just like those who believe the King James Version of the Bible is the only acceptable version. This should be their own personal conviction nor should they try to force others to accept their conviction. If God convicts you to wear dresses only then that is between you and he not other women. There probably is a reason God convicted you but has not convicted others.
The same thing about hair issues. The Bible is not clear on these things so if a person has a personal conviction then they should have it unto God. This is what the Pentecostal churches should do but they do not. They condemn others and try to shove their convictions on others and that is wrong.

If what you are doing is what you believe God wants you to do or what you are wearing is what you believe God wants you to wear or not to wear then that is great. Keep your convictions but keep them unto the Lord. Both men and women wore robes so both men and women can wear pants. The differences in the robes were the colors and the designs or the fringes. This distinguished male from female robes. Women pants are different from mens. Even womens jeans. It is only when women wear men's jeans that there are no differences.

I have people say because I wear shorts outside in the heat that I am being immodest but let them live with this skin allergy I have and have to wear long johns in the spring, summer and fall when the temperatures are so high and on top of that break out in rashes when I sweat too much, rashes that make me burn and itch like I am being bitten by hundreds of ants. When I was in the holiness church of course I just stayed inside during the hot months and then I had doctors say that I was going to have other problems because I was not getting any sun. Men need vitamin K which comes from the sun. So now I have other skin problems due to being inside for those years and not getting enough sun.

I don't believe God will cast me into Hell knowing full well what is wrong with me physically.

I am only going to make one statement here: The ony reason anyone goes to hell is for rejecting Christ's finished work on the cross. That is what my Bible says.

I am not trying to be harsh or hard but the Holiness groups will say outwardly that their standards has nothing to do with salvation but with pleasing God and they will contend the only thing that will send a person to Hell is rejecting of the gospel but allow someone in their congregation to quit following the standards and the first thing the person is told is they are going to go to Hell.

I had a lot of friends who waffled back and forth from those churches. Be gone for a few years. come back for a few years and all of this because of man made standards.

As Jesus himself said to the Pharisees so we need to listen also today. He told them they put such heavy burdens on the people that it was hard for them to serve God.
