VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican on Friday strongly deplored Israel's strikes on Lebanon, saying they were "an attack" on a sovereign and free nation.
Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano said Pope Benedict and his aides were very worried that the developments in the Middle East risked degenerating into "a conflict with international repercussions." "In particular, the Holy See deplores right now the attack on Lebanon, a free and sovereign nation, and assures its closeness to these people who already have suffered so much to defend their independence," he told Vatican Radio....

...Sodano said the Vatican condemned both "terroristic attacks" and military reprisals....

    ....

But Sodano reserved his harshest words for Israel. "The right of defence on the part of a state does not exempt it from its responsibility to respect international law, particularly regarding the safeguarding of civilian populations," he said.

I know I have asked this before, but I will ask again: When is the Vatican going to condemn Cardinal Bernard Law for his part in the Sex abuse cover up? I, for one, am not concerned about what the RCC thinks about Israel.

Me, neither. In fact, it would not be a surprise for some Protestant denominations to condemn Israel, either. No doubt, we will see some liberal Baptist groups do the same. :tear:

Hang on a second and let me see who I'm going with...

    ((Thinking..."Hmm...Nation of Israel...Whore of Babylon...Nation of Israel...Whore of Babylon...which one should I side with?))

OK, I've made up my mind. I'm going with Israel on this one.

How about our Supreme Court ? Bush keeps putting catholics on it. Every right-wing pundit, with the obvious exceptions of Rush Limbaugh & Micheal Savage, see everything thru the prism of the RCC. Tony Snow has said his first allegiance is to the church.

And if Bush put Baptists on the SC, then everything would be rosy? Please.

The Vatican is condemning "both "terroristic attacks" and military reprisals...", meaning that it is not taking sides in the conflict, just desiring that it, and especially the attacks within another sovereign nation, be stopped.

Gee, where did the pope say the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers is an attack on a soveriegn nation ?

His bias is very clear, to most.

    I agree with you here.

Yep. They are typically neutral when it comes to good vs. evil, right and wrong. They is moral equivalency in their eyes between terrorists and the nation which harbours it and the nation which is defending itself and won't negotiate with them for hostages. That kind of moral confusion is typical of a "church" that covers up sex abuse and then promotes one of the men who helped cover it up. The RCC is a "church" which has lost its way morally and still thinks they are relevant to the rest of the world and the kingdom of God.

I don't see that anyone is saying that Israel is snowy white here. Rather that Israel should be supported. I support Israel. Could they have handled this differently? Most likely they had a myriad of possible scenarios. But regardless of the path they chose to pursue, I'm gonna stand behind Israel.

Hmmm.. I deplore the acts of terrorism, the nation of Israel I do think has a right to exist... BUT the way some of the Israelis act, especially with the use of the military to bomb and shoot various people horrifies me. I don't like or condone the behaviour of either. The heavy handed acts of the Israelie government and its forces are not going to provide them with the security they desire.

Also, the theology of blind support for anything that Israel does is definately questionable, and I see no support for it in scripture.

    Heavy handed?

I am not so quick to make such assertions when I do not live in a country that consistantly suffers from attacks from those who are waitng to "drive them into the sea".

    Heavy handed? I think not.

If the so called "Palistinians" want to be safer here is a suggestion. Stop attacking Isreal. And it will be all over.

Every one of you should be ashamed. It is obvious that you are just jealous that you cant wear long flowing colorful robes and long narrow pointy hats to church, and swing a cup back and forth on a chain with smoke coming out. I still think the pope would look better with a propeller on his hat

    We...well at least I don't since I am not a Premiller...

Why do you guys act as if there is some kind of moral equivalence between Israel defending itself and a bunch of terrorists? Talk about offensive.

I wouldn't go that far, but I do support Israel in this case because I think they are doing the right thing.

I was thinking that we don't know what all their options were because we aren't in a leadership position in Israel. I think what they did was ok, but I don't know if it was the best thing because I don't know what all they could have done. I support it, but I'm sure they had other retalitory options that I would have supported too.

A big mistke in the title.

It's not a surprise that RCC condemn Israel, because RCC persecuted Israelites throughout the history, let alone Crusade.
RCC will continue to gear up for preparing the Great Tribulation against God's people.
