The last time pocadots and I stayed at a motel, we wondered about this issue, so we asked the maid if it was ok. She said the complimentary items like soap and shampoo were ours to keep, that they didn't mind, but they did mind when people took towels or pillows, etc.

You can buy small bottles of holy water at your local Catholic church. As long as the stolen soap is used with holy water, it is not a sin.

Yeah, cool for a small-town boy in the big city. My neck got a crick in it from
    looking up so much.

I haven't figured out yet how to address a poster directly but I would disagree with his mother taking food home with her from a buffet, with the rationalization that it was "paid for".

The buffets I am familiar with, it's all you can eat on the premises.

Mattresses, light bulbs, the extra rolls of TP, remote controls, and the alarm clock are off limits.

Lets get back on topic. In most hotels they have "large" and "small" comp soap.

Is it ok to take both of them or just the "small" ones?

Ask which items are "complimentary" when you check in.

Those are considered "expendables" on their Chart of Accounts and are write-offs.

Or just use what you need and leave the rest.

The only times I have a problem is when I stay at a Hilton. Their towels are so thick, I can't get them in my suitcase, so I end up having to leave the soap and shampoo behind.

As far as I now since you are paying for the room the soaps & shampos re complimnetry. In fact a lady at a motel gave me four bttles of Cream rinse when I told her that the soaps etc were going to the missionaies who teach others about Christ and I mentioned Criss shelters for battered women.

Another problem is that they chain the steam iron to the wall (but not the coffee maker).

The best way to steal towels is to put on your swim suit and act like you are going to the pool with the towel. Then just go to the parking lot and throw it in the car one towel at a time.

This thread is starting to go downhill, reaching the bottom with saturneptune's last post.

Is there someway we can revive this thread by relating hotel soap to Calvinism? For instance, the desire to take the soap could very well spring from our Total Depravity.

Okay, I've got us started, let's see what you can do with it.
