We recently joined a Southern Baptist Church and I was wondering how many people here are Southern Baptist (members of a Southern Baptist Church).

For obvious geographical reasons, not me! My church is however a member of the (UK)Southern Baptist Association, which is as close as I get nomenclature-wise to the SBC.

    I'm not ! I'm an Independent Fundamental
Pre-Millenial God Fearing Sin hating Baptist. [IMG] I'm not any better than anyone else, but my God-given standards would not allow me to be a southern baptist. :D

Remember, "Perfect peace have they which love my law, and nothing shall offend them", so don't be offended by that, O.K.? [IMG]

I am SBC, and theres nothing in my church less then God's standards for christians.
Ricky, your post is just not nice. The thread asks who is SBC, not who isn't, nor is your snide remark called for on this thread.

My church (the church I grew up in and came back to as an adult) was SBC until 1963 when they went independent. We didn't change any doctrine, just stopped contributing to the co-op, and severed ties.
In 1973 I joined a SBC in another town where I moved to and worked in. I left there in 1974. Am I still a member? I didn't do anything like have my letter moved or whatever you want to call it. I just joined my present IFB church.

    SBC here.

...and Ricky, I appreciate the scripture you used at the end of your post, but it appears you are using it to justify insulting remarks to people around you. Or is that not how you meant it? (Or does the big smilie mean your remarks are made "tongue-in-cheek?")

    Istherenotacause,

You have demonstrated another place where the KJV is inaccurate. The verse you quoted, Psalm 119:165 says:

Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.
    (KJV)

The phrase, "nothing shall offend them" should be translated, "nothing can make them stumble." as is done in the NIV and the NASB. Even the NKJV shows the KJV to be in error.

Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.
    (NIV)

This mistranslation is often used by KJVO's after they have made an offensive statement. Somehow they feel that this error in the KJV gives them the right to be rude.

I am an independent Baptist. Since Southern Baptists are independent, I have no problem joining a SBC. My first SBC was in Germany when I was in the Army. Zweibruecken Baptist was in the European Baptist Convention, which can be considered a state convention. In fact if you know of anybody serving in Europe, esp military, have them check out the EBC website.
But back to the subject, I have also been a member of churches with the GARBC, Free Will as well as non alligned.

Until just a few years ago, I would have agreed with you. My heritage is Southern Baptist; I have several ancestors who have been involved in church planting, and I have been a Southern Baptist since I was saved.

However, I have begun to feel uneasy with the new direction of the SBC. Specifically, they seem to be moving away from the historical stance of being independent churches in voluntary association for specific purposes, and moving towards a stance of having a "top down" defined faith. This is very reminiscent of the Catholic Church, with whom I do not agree as far as denominational organization is concerned.

I firmly believe that the local body of believers is, and should be, supreme in regards to matters of faith (with Jesus as its head, of course!). If there comes a day that the SBC mandates that the local congregation must agree to a universal denominational document to be considered "Southern Baptist", then that is the day I will no longer be a member of that particular denomination.

My Pentacostal buddy asked me one time what I would be if I weren't Southern Baptist!! My reply?? "My dear friend! If I weren't Southern Baptist I'd be plum ashamed!!"

Love the SBC! Will be one till I die! Grew up in the SBC church--called to be a SBC preacher--

I'm a former Southern Baptist. I renounced it a few years ago and now I'm simply a Texas Baptist (BGCT).
