I live in the South. I am a baptist. Therefore, I am a southern baptist.

To me the definition of an idependent church is one that is not a member of an association. That being said, I was raised in a BMA church. Later joined an independent Baptist church, and now after moving several years ago I am a member of a SBC. I believe that missionaries should be deputized and supported directly from the local churches and not an association. Accountability is greater! I do love my church and my pastor though. We're not officially members of a SBC, but are looking for a church home. After the experience we had at the IFB, we have no desire to go to another one, so we are visiting mostly SBC's right now.

I'm just a "plain ole baptist" down here in Tennesee.!! [IMG] and the only reason I'm Baptist is cause thats the closest thing to the bible I have found.
Just plain and simple....if you are a born again believer in my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ , I'll call ya my brother or sister. Praise be the name of Jesus !!!!!!!!!!

I have to disagree with you about the accountability. The only way that a local church can begin to compare with the type of accountability that SBC missionaries are held to is if the local church frequently sends folks to examine the missionary on the field and survey the work.

In doing a great deal of investigation regarding missionaries sent via the deputation process, I've found that there is essentially no accountability. Independent missionaries can tell the local churches what they want to hear when they are visiting and then do what they want on the field with essentially no accountability.

The independent Baptist Church that I was a member of and the ones that I have been affiliated with regularly send support teams on a regular basis (apx 1 time every year or two) to help with the ministry of the missionary. They may send one man or they may send a small group. When they return they report to the churches they came from! It works!

My dad was once on a mission board and was interviewing a missionary who had been on the field for nearly 25 years. The board asked the missionary why his ministry had not grown and what they could do to help. His reply: "I believe my ministry would grow if someone would show me how to win a person to the Lord!" They promptly de-commissioned him. Later as a pastor, my dad sent the association (Not the SBC) a letter requesting to know what was done with the mission money the church had been sending in! There response: "It's not your concern, we take care of our own matters and we are not accountable to the churches, just the missionaries"

I believe that a missionary should only be accountable to God and the Local church, not an assocaition. But to each his own! :D

Betty, I thought for sure I had posted on this thread but must have been on a poll.

I'm SBC and proud of it! Been SBC except for the years we lived in Connecticut and there weren't any around. We were American Baptist then and it was very hard for me. (Not enough singing, preacher wore a robe, vain repetition as in Lord's Prayer, Gloria Patri every week, NEVER had a Baptism...)

Blackbird.... If I weren't SBC... I'd just be dead.

I'm a Southern Baptist... I've grown up in them all my life. I've actually had the privilege of preaching at one IFB church though and at one IFB youth camp. While I have several good, close friends who are not Southern Baptist, I feel this is where God has placed me and am happy about it.
