Their live albums, particularly the "Dick's Picks" series, are their best.

I've seen them a couple of times and they always put on a good show.

A good friend of mine saw them a couple of years ago and, after the show, Greg and Warren came out to the bar to hang out.

Said they were very friendly and posed for pictures with everybody.

If you like the Allman Bros, do you like Great Southern or Widespread Panic at all?

I would love to see Christian music in this style.

I might start listening to Christian music again.

Darrell Mansfield used to do this quite a bit.

A lot of their lyrics don't, but I like some of their lyrics: "Ripple", "Scarlet Begonias", etc.

The last band I was in did a couple of their songs and the guys I play with now and I do a couple.

    Mike,

Theres been 2 Great Southerns of course. The 1st was Dicky's band after the ABB broke up in the mid 70's. I thought that groups 1st recording was quite good, the 2nd not as good, but still OK.

The current Great Southern only has a live recording out, and I think its very good. Lots of classic Dicky style lead guitar.

Dicky also put out 2 recordings as the Dickey Betts Band before bringing back the name Great Southern. This was right after Dickys leaving/firing from the ABB. "Lets all get together" is the only one I have and some of it is very good, some just so so.

I've never really taken to Widespread Panic. Some that I've heard was OK...but it didnt compell me to go out and get any of their recordings.

What do you think of some of the christian artists and groups I mentioned?

    Phil Keaggy?

    Iona?

    Edens Bridge?

    Big Tent Revival?

I get the impression we have similar tastes in music. Phil and Iona both have web-sites...

They both are still going strong and they JAM!

Also, what do you think of Vineyard Praise and Worship?

    God bless,

    Mike

    "Sunday's Child" was fantastic.

Aside from that, he doesn't really do much for me.

I have to be honest and tell you that I'm a little biased. Years ago, I was involved in the production end of CCM. I worked for the production company that did a lot of shows in the Philadelphia/South Jersey area, as well as the Creation Festival.

I had a bad experience with Keaggy and I've never really cared for him since.

Not really familiar with them. They both came along after I had given up on Christian music.

What little I've heard of them is OK but I'm only marginally familiar with them.

I'm not really a big fan of P&W. I used to have a couple of their tapes, plus some Hosanna Integrity tapes but I'm just not really into them anymore.

    Sorry to be so negative.

    You, too.

Saw the Grateful dead at least 50 times. Saw the Jerry Band about a dozen. I'm listening right now to a show from '90 in Buffalo.

Ever REALLY listen to Jerry ? Man, he did some great gospel stuff. A lot of it. Wouldn't suprise me one bit to find out he was saved as a youngster....

Thank you for that. It means that I really appreciate good musicians. I didn't really like the Grateful Dead when I was younger, but I do now. I am sure that you didn't mean it in this manner, but I do thank you for taking the time to reply.

Thanks to you as well, and for reproducing that Scriptural Passage.
You DO know that racin' is also in the world, don't you?

No, I didn't know that. I am new to them, and would appreciate additional information on this.

Wishing God's Best to all of you and your families,

    Excellent.

Is it a bootleg or legit?

I don't know but there's no question that he was influenced by Gospel music.

I could be wrong, but I believe that I remember him saying in the "Grateful Dawg" movie that the first song he and Grisman played together was Bill Monroe's "The Old Crossroad".

He's recorded Gospel songs with each of his side projects, Old and In the Way, JGB, The New Riders of the Purple Sage, the Grisman and Garcia and all of that.

    I was the same way.

I had a lot of friends who were into them and I just couldn't stand to listen to them.

    Now I love them.

I know a lot of people shake their heads and say that they don't get it and I can understand that. The Dead are definitely an aquired taste.

The Grateful Dead, along with other folk influenced artists from the 60's and 70's, drew much of their inspiration from folk, bluegrass, and country music, all of which have strong gospel roots. Many of the Southern Rock bands had that same influence. The Grateful Dead probably owe more to the Carter Family than they do rock music. I am a big fan of bluegrass gospel music, but believe that as a Christian, you can find inspiration in any kind of music, not just specifically Christian music. There is good and bad in everything. People may complain about the "lifestyle" of the Grateful Dead, but there have certainly been "Christian" artists whose lifestyles have not been models of perfection. None of us is perfect. I have found inspiration for my Christian growth from artists as diverse as Hank Williams, Paul Simon, Tim Buckley, Bert Sommer, Better than Ezra, Tommy James, John Mellencamp, and Stevie Wonder; sometimes in music that is specifically Christian oriented and sometimes not. It is how the music touches us that is important.

I have been deeply touched by the pain & beauty in Hank William's songs. As "Luke the Drifter" he wrote & recorded several excellent gospel songs. Good, solid songs.

The '90 show in Buffalo was downloaded from the internet, for free. The Grateful Dead actually encouraged people to record their shows, just like Bill Monroe. This is a soundboard recording from web1.nugs.net. They also have some Little Feat, & some Bela fleck.

This is one of the things I admired so much about them.

If you ever went to their shows, you would see all of these long poles sticking up in front of the stage. They were people holding homemade boom mics so that they could record. The Dead invited people to do it and even went so far as to reserve the space directly in front of the stage just for them.

That's what I meant in a previous post when I said "literally everything they ever did was recorded".

I enjoy the Dead as well, saw Widespread Panic at the New Orleans Jazz fest a couple years ago - they were a blast. My other fav old jam band - much better in concert than their albums is Little Feat

Those that have professed Christ and still hold onto the worldly music need to read Ephesians 4. The child of God is told to 'put off the old man', to 'put on Christ', and to 'put away the things of the flesh'.

We had a great sermon tonight--Ephesians 4--Putting off the old man--Putting on Christ---and putting away the things of the flesh (which would include listening to the "world's" music)

    Hi y'all.

I appreciate the concerns. And I greatly respect you guys, but the way I view it, it is no different than watching very talented athletes do what they do. I know a lot of people are scared of their name, but the simple fact is, the Grateful Dead played improv music at a very high level. They were VERY good at what they did. I wouldn't replace scripture with their lyrics, but see nothing wrong with listening to them.
