Returning to your post--hasn't anyone here ever heard of copyright???

Here is the interpretation that standingfirminChrist posted word for word. Notice below it is another interpretation similar to the one I drew. standingfirminChrist not only lifted the first interpretation without attribution, but failed to offer the alternate explanation given on the same page!
</font>
In all fairness, he did change one line to make it appear that he wasn't actually ripping off someone else's idea.

Of course he didn't offer the alternate explanation.

You have to remember that the goal here isn't the thoughtful examination of someone's music on it's own merits, but to demonize them at all costs, thus, giving himself the opportunity to look down his nose at anyone who likes their music.

I wasn't referring to that (although the song is not in the public domain either, but posting the lyrics when their source is attributed is not copyright infringement). I was referring to the way he posted someone else's interpretation of the song as if he had written it. Whenever you lift anything that anyone has written from a web site and post it somewhere else, you ought to state that you did not write this and say where it can be found.

I have seen multiple instances on this board where people have googled something, copied out a block of text, and pasted it in as their own response. Anyone doing this sort of thing in an academic course would receive an automatic failing grade for plagiarism. Our standards ought to at least rise to the level of secular organizations'!

Petrel,

I went to a that website you posted, and although the post that sfiC posted is very similar, there are no copyright infringements for two reasons...

1. That which is written on that site was written anonymously. For all we know sfiC could have been the original author.

2. There is no copyright mentioned on the explanation so there can be no copyright infringement.

It is funny, sfiC was showing the sin nature behind the lyrics in the songs of the Grateful Dead, and instead of admitting that the songs are not fit for a true child of God to listen to, you guys attack the messenger.

I'm not attacking anybody. I'm just responding to the whole "you like different music than I do, therefore, you're an inferior Christian to me" jazz.

He didn't show any sort of sin nature. He just found somebody else's opinion that seemed to agree with him and tried to pass it off as his own.

If he had been honest about it, he would have said that it's just one interpretation and then listed the second for us to compare.

Let's remember also that he's claimed that another song was about "turning people on to heroin", when that song has nothing to with heroin or turning anyone onto anything so, obviously, this guy's got some sort of fixation that causes him to see heroin references where there are none.

Now Playing: Club Trini - "Late Night Live at the Margaritaville Cafe New Orleans"

Mike Mck,

With all due respect...

I grew up in the rock and drug era of the 60's and 70's. I can say that in the songs mentioned heroin use can be seen from terms and phrases in the song.

My oldest brother did heroin. He would call the syringe a shotgun or a rifle. Heroin can be the powder and salt mixture mentioned in the song.

Scrolling back, looking at the Casey Jones song, reminds me of the song lyrics. It starts out with 'Drivin' that train, high on cocaine. Casey Jones you'd better watch your speed'

Now in that song, I see an out and out mention of drugs. In the case of Mr. Charlie, it is more subtle, but I can affirm, it is there.

Spare me the sanctimony.

Let's have a review of copyright law and plagiarism.

1. Anything you write is instantly copyrighted to the author. This also includes any musical or artistic works as well. Note that this very post is copyrighted to me. [IMG] True, I'm not going to go defend its use in a court of law, but that should not prevent the noble-minded from respecting my copyright.

2. Whenever you take someone else's words (or music, or art) and portray them as your own, you are plagiarizing.

Now it's entirely possible that standingfirminChrist is a recovering heroin addict (as the original site says), but I personally doubt it.

I am sure that he did not intend to break copyright or commit plagiarism, and hopefully if the board in general becomes more aware of these issues this will happen more rarely.

So then, did VP Cheney shoot Wittington with a syringe?

Or it can be a mixture of gunpowder and rock salt, which in the old days, was commonly used in shot guns.

But as I pointed out earlier, mentioning is not condoning.

Simply describing an activity in the course of telling a story does not mean that one is engaged in such an activity or suggesting that anyone else does it.

There are many songs that mention drug use that are decidedly anti-drug use and explain that there are bad consequences to drug use, "Casey Jones" being one of them. As I pointed out earlier, the song goes on to say "you'd be better off dead" than using barbituates.

And you are welcome to your opinion. If you have a conviction not to listen to that music, then, by all means, don't.

I happen not to share the opinion that it is an invitation to do drugs.

Now Playing: Deanna Bogart - "Out to Get You"

Ah, but sfiC did not take someone elses words and use them, but he changed the wording 'instead of put, he wrote inserted' He also wrote 'heroin in the place of another word. So, he did not take someone elses work, but rather used their idea. No plagiarism, no copyright infringement.

If anything, sfiC should have said derived from an original work by an anonymous author.

But in changing the words, the work from sfiC becomes his original.

I am certain that Hunter ...inserted some heroin related innuendos into this song.

The newcomer is reluctant, afraid of needles, etc., but the proponent of the drug says:

I won't take your life,
I won't even take a limb.
I'll just unload my shotgun
And take a little skin.

How true it is, the only evidence of a Heroin fix is a tiny pinhole of skin disturbed.

From the beginning of the song, it is stated:

I take a little powder,
I take a little salt,
I put them in my shotgun...

I read many years ago that cocaine is a salt, from a chemical point of view. Therefore, it might be more correct to say that this song is about SPEEDBALLING (i.e., mixing cocaine and heroin) than simply about heroin.

Another point along the speedball theory:

You take a silver dollar,
You take a silver dime,
You mix 'em up together
In some alligator wine.

Well, every junkie knows what a "dime" is.

A junkie might shoot 20-30 dollars worth of heroin and 5-10 dollars worth of cocaine in one shot. In the sixties the price may have been in the ballpark of 10-1.

You may ask, what about

I can hear the drums beat voodoo all night long,
Mr. Charlie tellin' me I can't do nuthin' wrong.

A strong speedball creates an audible effect in one's ears, which could be likened to drums or bells ringing. It also gives one a feeling of immense well-being (the heroin side of the experience) as in "I can't do nuthin' wrong."

Also, a junkie calling the needle a "shotgun" is not at all uncommon. Other expressions for the syringe include rifle, rig and works.

Now, if I only could tell you who "Mr. Charlie" is....

Derived from an anonymous work. Edited by me.

Oh my, you're making me laugh out loud! [IMG] I strongly advise you to follow the link I posted above to a discussion of plagiarism. It could stop you from making a very serious mistake!!

To everyone: Plagiarism does not merely cover exact wording. If you copy a block of text and change two words, you are still plagiarizing! Plagiarism covers the ideas presented. If you take someone's clearly presented train of thought and just paraphrase the whole thing without adding your own thoughts as well, you're plagiarizing! And you get an automatic failing grade, and possibly expelled. :D

OK, back to that evil rock......

Little Feat came out with a record in 2003, called "Kickin' it at the Barn". As a long time Feat fan, I can honestly tell you it is their best album since lowell George died, in '79. If you like Little Feat, you will be happy for them after listening to it. They are finally moving on beyond George, which was no......Little Feat. (Get it ?)

And the REAL good news is, Phyllis and I have tickets to see them at the historic Wilma Theatre here in town in two short weeks. And the most supremely excellent news is, the show is a benefit for M.A.P.S. which is a charity raising money to keep music education available in public schools, which not only means I'm contributing to a great cause, but the tickets are also tax-deductable.

Roll right thru the night......

Please be careful with the term 'liberalism'. In contemporary evangelical terminology, a 'liberal' is one who denies foundational Bible truths or the veracity of the Bible itself. It has NOTHING to do with ones tastes in music.

Although I would rather die than listen to junk like this, I respect the right of my brothers in Christ to be wrong sometimes just like I am.

BroCurtis...

Do they have a lead guitar player now playing exclusively, or mostly, slide like Lowell George did?

Also, is that "Kickin at the Barn" album a live recording?

God bless,

Mike

Fred Tackett joined the band, playing guitar, mandolin, & trumpet. Paul Barerre still plays slide, but not on every somg. They also have Shawn Murphy singing, and she can sing like noone's business.

"Kickin' it at the Barn" is a studio album. They obviously spent a lot of time on it. The album goes from super mellow to all out rock. It really is a great record.

I used to be a major Jimmy Buffett fan. I listened to the Grateful Dead alot as well since several of my friends were "Dead heads".

I guess if one does not feel convicted by listening to them it's not necessarily sin. There are many who can sip a glass of wine now and then, without feeling conviction, and not commit sin.

For me however hearing those songs brings back a lot of memories of living a Godless drunken college life. Thus I mostly listen to bluegrass and gospel these days.

But I don't think that I could agree that "across the board" listening to the Dead or other similar groups automatically constitutes sin.

That's how Mike can avoid having to admit that he isn't being truthful when asserting the band's innocence.

</font>
I've already explained why I believe and why the lyrics don't support the idea that these songs are advocating drug use.

Speaking of being untruthful, let me be the first to remind you that, while standingfirminChrist claimed that one of the songs he mentioned is about turning someone on to heroin, heroin is never once mentioned in the song, nor is the idea of turning anyone on to anything.

You're free to accept my opinion or not. Frankly, I don't care.

Well, I'm confused why SFIC is even participating in this thread. But I'll ask him instead of talking behind his back.

SFIC, are you trying to show that the words to this music are not something Christians should listen to? Are you posting the words to the music in order to condemn it?

If you are, then why did you say "One does not condemn something by taking part in it" on a thread about "Crash" (the movie)?

LINK

I'm not trying to attack anyone or cause any trouble. I'm just trying to understand how some people seem to say one thing on one thread and seem to do the opposite on another thread.
