If you were to be looking for a new church, because of relocation, dissatisfaction with your 'old' one, or for whatever reason, how would the following 'discoveries' about a church you are visiting affect your willingness to join that church?

Considering that my family is currently looking for a new church home, this poll hit close to home.

I suppose it may be inferred, but you missed one of the critical elements in my search--Does this church (minister/pastor/preacher) stick to scripture for the sermons, and not "social, or feel-good gospel"?

Another point that would be of critical importance to me would be the church's stance on the literalness of the Word!

I strongly suspect that the question re: homosexuals would have been answered differently for most IF the last condition had not been part of the answer; for me anyway, but as written it was a no-no!

You're right; it is inferred. But would you ask that question to a minister or member of a church new to you, and with a 'Yes' answer, just leave it at that? Or would you get down to specifics?-- what Bible version, what type(s) of music, what do you teach regarding 'stewardship'?, et al.

Same thing. If they say "Yes, we believe in the Word literally," do you assume that has to mean it is your kind of church?

Maybe there should have been a 3rd option regarding the question of sexual morality, such as "This church welcomes homosexuals, but does not hesitate to say homosexual behavior is sinful." I think you gotta admit, though, that trying to cover every point of evaluation is almost impossible. I really think that people eliminate, consider, and choose churches more on the impression they are given by the people there than upon strict doctrinal guidelines, even if they aren't fully aware of it.

We will be looking for a church/school once we hit the CONUS this late Summer, but not yet sure where we will end up. Apr 12th is the big day we find out.

No, you will have to visit for several weeks, or talk to current members, or observe the current members & their lifestyle; OR all the above, or some combination thereof! AND, MOST important--listen to the Holy Spirit!!!

Some of the points may never be known in time to influence your decision, so the best way, IMHO, is to judge as best you can and rely on God to lead you in your choice.

Case in point: when my family moved to our current location,we started to visit around. Went to SS at one very prominent church & was totally turned off by the lack of (our perception anyway) commitment to the scriptures in the SS.

One visit & that church was off our list.

Next church we visited for several Sundays, got to know several of the members and the Pastor, and we've been here for 37 years!

I don't know. I just consider topics that I know we have differing opinions about and try to organize the options.

I usually prefer the LBO churches - Living Bible Only, being that they are the one true way. [IMG]
