I'm Afraid to Say That...

I've been following Bible translations since I was in my teens in the 90s and I haven't found the perfect translation (but I did settle for the NASB).

I was reminded of that tonight while comparing several versions with my NT Greek text.

Here's what I have in mind:

1. Paul says in 1 Cor 5:5:

ESV, NASB: "I have decided to deliver [paradounai] such a one to Satan."

NIV/TNIV, NRSV: "hand this man over to Satan" (paradounai is rendered "hand over").

NET, HCSB: "turn this man over to Satan."

2. Then consider 1 Tim 1:20:

ESV, NASB, NET, NIV/TNIV: "whom I have handed over to [paredoka]Satan."

NRSV: "whom I have turned over to Satan."

HCSB: "I have delivered them to Satan."

3. Now, in both 1 Cor 5:5 and 1 Tim 1:20 we have paradidomi followed by satanas.

4. In all the versions above only the NIV and TNIV are consistent in translation.

5. The contexts are the same and so we should have had a faithful rendering in all these versions.

6. The concordant value has been reduced except in the NIV/TNIV.

The NLTse didn't get it right at 2 Tim 1:9 and Titus 1:2.
