My question is how do you know about God. You say that you are interested in thinking deeply about God, but how does that look?

What do you know about God other than His revelation in Scripture?

I wonder what the early Christians knew about God when the scriptures were still being written. Now in saying that, I'm not trying, for instance, to make oral tradition equal to scripture like the Catholics do, but the Bible wasn't dropped down from heaven and intact.

And how do you interpret the Bible? Do you seek to understand the context in which each book was written -- geographical context, historical context, cultural, social, theological, philosophical, etc.? That can make a considerable difference in meaning. How do you determine if a passage is meant to be taken literally, or allegorically, etc.? That also makes a difference. Those are some reasons why there are so many denominations. And what about the canon? How do you know which canon is the correct one? Protestants, Catholics, and Orthodox have different canons. What about the church fathers? Do you give their writings any weight? The early church saw things differently than the later church.

I believe all these things factor into how I know God.

In the earliest days, they at the least had what we term today as the Old Testament Scriptures.

The early Christians had the Scriptures and the teachings of the Apostles which are also Scripture except those instances where it is stated otherwise.

I hold Scripture as the words of God (God "breathed") because I do not think that part if Scripture was error or an addition to try and get people to believe it is God's revelation.

What criteria do you use to reject parts of Scripture as error and accept other parts as true?

    Jesus.

I don't reject specific parts of scripture as error, but I do compare everything with the teachings of Jesus. If anything seems to contradict or conflict with His life and teachings, I choose to follow Jesus.

Where do you get your teachings of Jesus from and how do you know they are true.

And you base your understanding about Jesus from the 1963 Baptist Faith & Message, not the Bible (post #72). I now know who you are. It took a while to figure it out. No woman told you about this forum or who to watch out for.

No, you don't know anything about me nor who I am. I base my understanding about Jesus from the Bible, especially the Gospels. No creed or statement of faith is authoritative for me.

I could give you the name of the woman and the church she attends, but she wouldn't like that. And I'm not a backstabber like some I have met, and apparently some on here. Now go back and try to figure out some more, and you'll still be wrong.

By the way, you were not one of those she warned me about, but maybe you should have been.

Do you hold the Gospels to have more gravitas than the rest of the New Testament? If it's in the Gospels, it's definitely true, if it's in an epistle, not so much?

I'm sorry you feel attacked. However I do feel most everyone in here desires to have you see that the Bible is an absolute standard you can be confident in.

No. But I do appreciate the direct words of Jesus.

Well that sounds like something I cant help with.

    Coming back to the topic.

How do you differentiate passages that are without error and those with error?

God is inerrant. And our 66 books in our Bible was given to us by our inerrant God through men of His choosing. What is not inerrant are the readers/interpreters. The translations are not what is inerrant. The known variants of the copies of the manuscripts are not what is inerrant.

I didn't come here because I needed to raise my blood pressure. I'm outta here for a while and will come back later, unless I get banned for no reason.
