Actually, no, I had no idea you were once a teacher. But that means you should know how much stuff kids learn from other kids, normally when the teacher's back is turned.

But, its not Wiki's unreliability that is the problem. Wiki is "unabridged", you know, like some dictionaries that give the definition of words inappropriate for children. Only, Wiki is VERY unabridged in that it gives pictures or links to pictures to go along with those terms that are inappropriate for adults much less children. And, unlike the TV, where you can access a guide to describe the contents of a program, Wiki links right to the bad stuff with no warning whatsoever. Thankfully, this was one lesson learned from another parent rather something we got to experience for ourselves (unlike the dare I posted above, which is something that happened to my husband, just yesterday).

I do. And our children are no exception.

If a Wikipedia page has words inappropriate for children, then the computer won't open that page.

Fortunately, most of us who have children are smart enough to have internet filters.

You have young children evidently. Wanna guess how long it would take one of my teens to circumvent a filter? :D (ps, Daddy is computer guy that does computer forensics)

We instead took the route of not allowing internet access period until they were 12. (with the exception being the youngest who was allowed on a tad early because we homeschool.) Then they get an undetermined amount of time where they can only be on when we are in the room (hmm, now that I think of it, this is how we dealt with tv as well). Undetermined because each kid is different. During this time they get good solid training on how to survive the rigors of the internet and what to do if they stumble onto something inappropriate or download a virus (ugg, I managed to corrupt my computer just yesterday with a virus  ).

A funny for you since you were a teacher. Just before Christmas all the parents in the system got an addendum to the district's internet use policy. Now it specifically and CLEARLY states that if our children get on the internet and spend money on mommy and daddy's credit card that the school is NOT responsible. Seems that some of our bright teens (it wasn't mine!) got around the school's filters and ordered all sorts of merchandise. The affected parents, being highly upset over the huge bill their child had run up, got the idea that the school should have prevented it, even though our original policy stated made it a offense punishable by suspension to fiddle with the school's filters!

yeah, I won't be relying on filters to do the job I should be doing of supervising my children on the internet any more than I rely on parental controls to keep my kids off MTV.

Its not MM that I watch, but it sure is hard to find the Braves games without a TV. And college football, just isn't the same on the radio!

    17 (eighteen in April), 16, 14, 12, 11, and 16 months.

The two oldest are in college and our 14 year old is taking college classes. Computers are a regular part of their lives. I have no doubt that they could bypass filters if they wanted to. That still doesn't mean that we're going to return to having a TV in our home.

Wait a second! You homeschool, and yet you criticize us for choosing not to have a TV? You hypocrite! Don't you realize that the same arguments you're making to condemn us are the same ones anti-homeschoolers make against you?

We have Gunsmoke and the Rifleman on DVD, as well as Bonanza.

We also have a pretty good collection of the WB cartoons, including the ones from the 40's that they no longer show or distribute here.

Wait? Did I start this thread? No, I believe that was YOU who started this thread with a swat in the direction of all of us who do allow our children to watch tv. *I* haven't condemned anyone for their choices, only pointed out that there were other opinions. *MY* opinion works very well:

FOR MY OWN FAMILY, other families must choose for themselves.

Anti-homeschoolers aren't really a part of my culture. Matter of fact, the public school I withdrew my first chronically ill child from was glad to see me go. I caused them too much trouble! So much in fact, that they were equally glad to see I had plans to homeschool the next kid in line.

However, I support the HSLDA should opinions change.

 You mean you don't homeschool?!!!!!!! Gasp!

Gunsmoke, etc weren't allowed when I was a kid because Miss Kitty was a, a, hmmm, Saloon girl who worked in a BAR!!! How can ya'll allow your children to watch a show that glorifies ALCOHOL!? Even only a little bit? Much less what it was implied Miss Kitty did in the upstairs. (my parents painted tv shows with a wide brush, so even if Miss Kitty belonged to some other western, all such shows were tainted)

Do you see, as Jerome has pointed out, that you can find something bad even in the shows you permit? Can you not see the contradiction you are allowing?

My Bible says to dwell on the good. The bad can be dealt with by proper supervision and instruction on when to turn the tv OFF.

Not at all. I didn't "swat" at anybody. All I said is that there is a story in the news that illustrates why my family has made a decision we felt was the right one for our family.

I didn't say anything about anybody else or anybody else's children.

You're the ones who started in with the whole stupidity about us not teaching our children to discern right from wrong and sheltering them.

Yes, we do homeschool. I've made several posts in the homeschooling forum toward that end.

    Then don't watch Gunsmoke.

Sure you can make up things about anything. The question is, is it reasonable?

Then you deal with it that way. We've chosen to deal with it another way.

What is your purpose here other than to attack me? You've completely ignored the issue raised in the OP, so I can only assume that your only purpose is to needle me about the choices my wife and I have made about what is going to be allowed in our house.

Like I said, I find it really interesting that a group of people claiming to be Christians will condemn a fellow Christian for not having a TV, but then have no problem with a cartoon aimed at children that features strippers.

And again, I didn't attact you. Lets look at this again from my first post:

^^^This was me saying that I saw no need to chuck my tv because Nickalodean, who has always in my memory moved to adult tv in the evenings, choose to play a show that I didn't approve of because it is easy enough to simply turn it OFF.

It was you who accused me of exposing my children to filth, because I didn't chuck my tv as you have:

    See?

I see. So then, by your own logic, are you honest enough to admit that you accused us of not teaching our children to "learn to discern the difference between the good and the bad" and that we are not "training [our] children how to resist the devil and he will flee from you"?

But, again, I find it interesting that you insist on making me and my family's decisions the issue, while refusing to address the OP.

I'll allow you could possibly have taken it that way. I'll admit that your post title led me to believe something that perhaps you didn't intend: that tossing the tv was the only/best way to deal with the unholiness of certain programming. And that idea combined with a few posts by others than yourself, led to my first post

The OP? I discussed it. I said its a non issue for us because we will simply turn it off. I also said that Nick is only doing what Nick has always done and stopped showing kid shows at night in favor of adult programing. It used to be that "Nick at Night" as it was called, showed reruns of older tv programming and then the company that owns it moved a good deal of that to TV land. However, evening progamming at Nick continued to be adult oriented. I suppose the marketing division thinks that if that adults won't change the channel, from where their kids left it, if the adult's attention is engaged by an adult oriented show. That in turn raises market share (or at least that is the idea).

I also discussed that much of Nick's children's programming doesn't meet our definition of appropriate:

See? You and I are simply at different ends of the spectrum of ways to deal with inappropriate tv shows.

This thread didn't turn out very fellowship-ey.

Some people get rid of the TV; some people shut it off. Some people install an internet filter; some people stand over their kids' shoulders. Personally, I don't care what y'all do. I do what my husband and I feel is best for our home.

And our home loves the Hillbillies!

To cite an old saying, "Why throw out the baby with the bath water?"

Bad news has often made a good sermon. The on-off controller works well!

    Cheers,

So, when you accuse me of doing something, I'm guilty. End of story.

But when you do something, all of a sudden it's "Oh, I guess I can see how you might have taken it that way..."

That's just as disingenuous as when politicians say "I'm sorry you were offended".

But then, we've already established that you're a hypocrite.

That's funny, because I've read your posts several times and I still can't find anything at all about cartoon strippers on a children's TV network.

You'd better make sure it meets with menageriekeeper's approval first.

As do we. So much so that we call our oldest daughter Ellie Mae (real name: Melody) because of her way with animals and all of the "critters" she takes in.

That was quite uncalled for and if one of my children said that, they'd be punished and cut off from all outside influences including reading, TV, seeing friends, watching videos, internet and such. We do that because that sort of attitude is not taught in our home so they must have learned it from someplace else. So I see how effective a lack of TV is in your home.
