This past week I was talking to someone from a GARBC church. She mentioned that the church is really GARBC in name only. I was infomed that for the past 10-15 years they have not been very active with the Association.
Here is my question. Why be a affiliated with an association, convention, fellowship, ect, In Name Only? I fully appreciate the autonomy of the local church, but why claim affilation if you are not serious about it. Or could it be, that is how we allow our members to be. They are members of "First Baptist" in Name only! At least we can count them on the roll.
I contend that if your church is not at least moderataly active, then just be completely Independnt.
Thoughts, (please mention your Bap background, so we can see where you are comming from)
I grew up in a GARBC, been a member of several IFB over the years, (due to my miliary moves) and currently I am a member of a SBC.

You are right . You should not only fly the flag of the ship you are on you should help keep it afloat and seaworthy.

One of the local GARB pastors nearby preaches the right stuff but doesn't believe it. How's that for true unbelief.

Some folks stay in without their hearts being in it so that their pastor can save their annuity.

General Association of Regular Baptist Churches, We're the Regular Baptist folk [IMG]

Frequently the Church Constitution will state the associations that a church belongs to. The process of changing a founding constitution is long and arduous. Many people resist any change---even the obvious changes of association.

Here in Pennsylvania the Regular Baptists are even more ridgedly conservative (stuffy) than usual :D

Peppy music, drums, active and modern evangelistic programs... definitely not the norm.
Where I attend, we have not been associating with the PA state GARB for the past 15 years or more...
yet it's in the constitution that we are.

Currently the leadership is working on changing the problem but we're waiting on God... (to fix a few older holdouts. )

If they weren't they wouldn't be Regular Baptists. They would have stayed in the Northern Baptist Convention or gone into the CBA. I speak as a member of a Regular Baptist church that predates the NBC and hence the GARBC. When the time came for us to leave the NBC, we affiliated with the CBA back when that group was founded back in the late 40s.

This goes to what I wrote earlier on another thread about "Truth in Advertising" on church signage.

Maybe churches need to be a part of associations in order to negotiate insurance and other financial contracts at a group purchasing rate?

In keeping with the sea-faring imagery, anything else would be piracy [IMG]

BTW, I am missionary landmark Baptist (independent). Visited a GARBC once in Indiana.

Wouldn't it be nice if Baptist simply meant Baptist?

Amen - Oh, if only it could be true. Yet baptists sometimes treat each other as worst of enemies instead of close relations. Normally over a small difference in doctrine. It's a shame, isn't it?

I visited a church while looking for one that was also probably GARBC in name only. Not very active in the denomination, and fellowship with mostly Independent churches. I would treat GARBC churches the same as independent ones, you better check them out before automatically approving or disapproving of them, they are all over the map.

Our independent baptist church uses Regular Baptist Press Sunday school material for the kids almost exclusively.
