Every once in a while, I have posted an item that folks on the forum may examine for doctrinal error or flaws in theology.

This post concerns a theology that is dangerous yet excepted in many churches.

In the Far East, the Tibetan Budist uses this:

    Called a prayer wheel

Look at the partial lyrics to this song:
I once was lost in sin but Jesus took me in
Well then a little light from heaven healed my soul
Well, he bathed my heart in love, and wrote my name above
Well just a little talk with my Jesus gonna make it right

We’ll just have a little talk with Jesus
Were gonna tell him all about our troubles
He will hear our fainted cry
He will answer by and by
Oh well, when you feel a little prayer wheel turning
And you will know a little fire is burnin’
You will find a little talk with Jesus makes it right
    (Rest of lyrics snipped)
(Original lyrics by Cleavant Derricks, and sold to the the Stamps Baxter music company to provide hymnals for a church, Elvis Presley, Statler brothers and many others have made recordings of this song)
No where in the Scriptures do we find the use of a prayer wheel, yet here in this song we have a reference to one.

Is it just coincidental, or is there some distraction from the true presentation of the motive to pray that the author didn’t realize?

    What are your thoughts?

Rest of the song can be hear here:

Dick Eastman had a book published in 1978 entitled, "The Hour That Changes the World". It included something like this. Maybe his idea and and the song are related?

The song was written prior to 1937, and published in 1937, so I doubt the chart has any relation to the song.

Actually the original lyrics written did not include the words “feel a little prayer wheel turning”
    But we’re these:
Have a little talk with Jesus
And tell Him all about your troubles,
    He'll hear our faintest cry
And He will answer by and by.
When you feel a little down,
You have a little fire burning,
Well, have a little talk with my Jesus
    Gonna make it right.
However, once the song was sold to Stamps and Baxter, I have no idea who changed the lyrics, however the whole is polluted by a single inappropriate phrase, in my opinion.

I have hated the song for years

yes, it’s inappropriate in that prayer (ie mans encounter with a thrice Holy God) is trivialized into “just a little talk w Jesus”

I would think Xian’s should be concerned about that aspect of the song but oh well momma sang it, granddaddy sang it, we sang it at revivals. Etc etc etc

And just to be crystal clear here, when you trivialize prayer, you trivialize God

    now I’m done

There is absolutely no Biblical basis where names are said to be added to the book of life in the New Testament. But there is the promise to never blot a name out, Revelation 3:5. Otherwise names are are said to be written or not to be written in a book.
