IRA and the West Bank

On another thread it was metnioned that "recently the IRA were making bombs in the West Bank to blow up Jews.

Serious query here. I keep hearing this, but all I can find by googling is a the arrest of a suspected "Real IRA" (not "THE" IRA) man in July of 2003. Can somebody point me in the right direction for more details?

 

The IRA is the original group - the ones you have heard about in the news. They declared a cease fire which they have basically honoured since 1994.

Real IRA are a "splinter group," composed of a bunch of thugs, who can't accept that the war for Nothern Ireland is over.

 

Real IRA are also involved in drugs and a plethora of other crimes. Nobody, not even IRA, have any use for them. It is feasible that IRA could disband in the next few years.

Real IRA bombed Omagh in 1998, calling in a bomb warning that directed victims to the bomb instead of away from it. Thirty eight people were slaughtered that tragic August day. It was the straw that broke the camels back in dealing with terrorists on this island.

No terrorist group, Irish Nationalist, or British Loyalist had ever done that kind of thing before.

 

Michael Collins was part of the original IRA (or IRB , Irish Republican Brotherhood, as it was first called).

The IRA was originally something like the Minutemen in US history, but after the establishment of the Irish State, which they have not yet totally recognised, they became paramilitary, and eventually terrorist. Today they are represented by a political party, Sinn Fein, and are hoping to get into government in both the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland. Sinn Fein elected their first member of the European Parliament this year.

The DUP, Ian Paisley's party, will not sit in government with Sinn Fein until they declare that the war is over and surrender all of their weapons. DUP are now the largest party in Northern Ireland so things are at a standstill at the moment.

Real IRA are just a criminal gang using the name of the IRA.

Just to clarify something, and I don't know how I missed it. The IRA which makes the news is called Provisional IRA. That will help differentiate between it and Real IRA.

 

Sorry Matt - I remember the Docklands bombing. I by no means meant to lessen the horror of that terrorist act, I simply forgot it in my earlier post.
