In my opinion, most people who ask personal questions are just being nosy and do not deserve an answer.

I have a beautiful set of CZ earrings. I have had people ask me if they are real. My answer was always, "If you can see them and touch them, they must be real."

    Is that a lie?

I would think they could figure out they weren't diamonds by my answer. If not, oh well...

I really don't feel like it's anyone's business. I mean, what difference does it make to anyone what I pay for my personal items?

Some people think they deserve an answer just because they ask a question. My reply to something like that is, "Why on earth would you ask me a personal question like that?"

§ue (stay outta my personal space...) :D

As the father of an 18yo daughter who is not biologically mine, I can tell you this is 100% total truth. She's mine in every way, shape, and form, except for the fact that I wasn't the sperm donor. Most of her friends don't know we're not biological. If they find out, it's no big deal to either of us, because we know that we're father and daughter.

People that have loads of money do not wear real huge pieces of jewelery out in public. It is not safe.

I don't have loads of money OR huge pieces of jewelery. I have a small pair of CZ stud earrings. But I still think it's very rude for someone to ask me if they're real...

That is a truth told in such a way as to evade the whole truth, or the gist of the question. Possibly this same explanation could be applied to those who may have wanted to assassinate the character of Jesus or his mother, as has been discussed. But the irony, then, is that we [Christians] ARE supposed to know about that, or else the biblical writers told us something that is 'none of our business.'

But one thing apparent in the posts here is that many cannot discuss this topic other than from a moralistic standpoint, which the poll does not call for.

It's not just rude but very rude. One always notices what they are looking for.

There are forms of it all that can be lies and forms of it all that can not be lies.

I was told something in confifentially that was quite private. A few days later, the person's mom asked me if you know what happened. I told her that she had to discuss it with her Child or ask her child.

Because almost all the time when a person says that, he or she CAN discuss the situation. What is usually meant is, "I WILL not discuss the situation."

There is nothing wrong with saying, "I don't feel free to discuss this issue."

That is not a lie and neither does it cause you to betray a confidence.

As I've pointed out before, that is a moralistic argument which the poll does not call for. It's usually not true that a person CANnot [is not able] to discuss an issue, rather it is that he/she, for reasons, sound or unsound, refuses to do so.

    Next poll, instead of asking:

if you say "I can't discuss this matter"?

    I'll ask:

    Is it a lie
if you say "I am not authorized by a
higher power to discusss this with you
    at this time

"Higher power" can be God who expects you
to hold your peace unless you can minister
to another; your working superiors who may
    consider the information proprietary; your
co-ministers who may have shared information
bordering on gossip to tap your knowledge
and may not want to to
share the information with those who cannot
help, your fellow house persons may be
depending on you to protect them from social,
    spiritual, or physical harm.

In such cases, it is NOT a lie to say that
(though in many such cases I see no reason
why you should reveal you have
something that you don't want to tell).

Also, Ed, for your next poll:

"Is it a lie to ask for intimate details under the pretense of praying about them when all you want to do is gossip?"

    Good idea! Thank you.

Please send me a PM telling all the intimate
details so I can figure out if the answer
    is YES or NO. :D

Is it a lie when we tell Jesus that we will be in church the following Sunday, then one or more of the family becomes ill the following Sunday and cannot attend church?
