Yes, and it's a shame that the word has been corrupted. I still use it sometimes, because it's difficult to find a replacement that is generally recognized and understood.

But, for sure, most of the people and agendas that today are called "conservative" would have been called liberals just a decade ago, and would have been called leftist radicals a generation or two ago.

I don't know that agenda's today called "conservative" would have been called liberals just a decade ago. I know they wouldn't have in my home state of Illinois, as the principles have seemed to stay the same. They may have been called liberals two to three generations ago, but not in the generation just passed.

What was considered a liberal agenda in the 1996 GOP platform was stripped out by Bush in 2000. The party has done an about face on those issues and "conservatives" have no problems with it.

By deffinition alone, the neo-conservatives are the "liberals" of the past.

I wouldn't say that ALL conservative have no problem with it. I know for a fact that many conservatives in the GOP have voiced displeasure to Mr. Bush about what has been going on in the party over the last four years back to the time of his father's presidency.

Again, it points out that the definition of "conservative" has lost all moorings.

I am used to these things, among others, being the hallmarks of "conservatism":

    1. A desire to make abortion illegal.

    2. The desire for the federal government to stick to functions strictly outlined in the Constitution, thereby shutting down numerous departments and making it much smaller and less expensive.

    3. Acceptance of Christian moral standards in public life...which would frown heavily on homosexuality, adultery, etc., as well as dishonesty and "smear" politics.

And, yes, in the '80's, before the Bush crowd completely took over the GOP, there was much influence for these ideas. Today there is practically none, because the people who claim to believe in them would rather follow the GOP leaders than their own beliefs, IMO.

Peroutka...I researched him today. Not as impressive as I was hoping. I was expecting a Lamar Alexander type conservative. Someone who put morality first and wanted to preserve capitalism, the constitution, and do away with income tax.

I think Bush is a better choice. Bush is the real deal, though the media has relentlessly attacked him without reason or base. Billy Graham sure thinks Bush is the better choice. So does Max Lucado, Pat Roberson and James Dobson.

I guess that just goes to show you that even our country's "religious" leaders can be wrong at sometimes. ;)

Actually, JGrubbs, I don't think they're wrong. Leesw is right, Peroutka and the platform aren't as impressive as people make them out to be. Could be the reason for them making little to no headway.

I guess that is a matter of opinion. I am very pleased with the Constitution Party platform, and with Peroutka as a man of God and the only conservative Christian candidate on the ballot in November.

The reason the Constitution Party is "making little to no headway", as you say, is because there are so many pragmatic conservative Christian voters who would love to support the party, but feel that they have to "wait till the Constituion Party is more viable", and because the two major parties have done everything they can to control the system to keep the third-parties out.

I don't know why you would conclude that Peroutka shorts morality. His writings are thoroughly Christian, in my experience.

As far as I know, Peroutka is the only candidate, with the exception of Badnarik, who DOES want to do away with the income tax. If that is a consideration for you, why would you think Bush is better?

As to the constitution, Peroutka puts it at the center of his policies and writings. How can you possibly call him short on that???

    As to:

Lucado...I didn't know he had any political background from which to draw...does he?

    Robertson...I don't take him seriously.

Dobson...a good man, but I'm getting tired of his routine:

"The Republicans have stabbed us in the back again, we won't put up with it any more" ... ... "Vote for the Republicans" ... "They have stabbed us in the back AGAIN!!! Let's show them that we won't take it anymore!... ..."Get out to the polls, and keep the Democrats from getting in"... ... ... "AGAIN the GOP stabbed us in the back...that's it, we're just not going to take it any longer... ... ... "Vote Republican" ... on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on.

Well, who can explain this: The general consensus about Lucado, Robertson, and Dobson (from what I've seen on this board in the Baptist only sections) is they are all heretics. The same people that call them heretics are for Bush, too! Hmmm.....it sure seems strange.
