Is it a sin to lie to a pet of yours.

At first this was started as a joke with my wife, but I got thinking about - would it actually be a sin to lie to your cat or dog?

Uh, hmmm, I'd have to think about this. When I tell my dog she's not ugly, well, she is, so am I sinning? Hmmm...

Serously, in order to be a sin of lying, there has to be a concept of comprehension to the one you're lying to. You can't deceive someone who isn't able to be decieved. So, I would say, no, you can't lie to your pets, no matter what you tell them. Now, I'm going to go home and say some untrue things to my son's snake.

Yes I think it can be a sin to lie to your pet. It's about what's in your heart though.
I tell my dogs "I'll be right back" when I leave, even though I may be gone 8 hours. That is not lying since they don't know how to tell time. :)

But if I were to offer them a treat and get them all excited and then deliberately withhold the treat from them just to laugh at their reaction, that would be a sin because there would be wickedness going on in my heart.

    A related question:

If I were to go to the chicken shed with murder in my heart, am I sinning?

Are you certain they can't tell time? I feed dog biscuits every night at 8:pm and my dogs line up in their usual feed station every night at the same time. PS. One barked for a wrist watch for Christmas! (Just kidding,,,I lied!)

Is it a sin to lie to a relative who has dementia about geographical location.....like talking as if in England years ago when you are really in Canada?

    Cheers,

    Jim

Tohmi must be related to your pets - he crys for supper at 6pm if it is not ready.

Also, Mrs Salty works at a hosipital and said that a person with dimentia who was upset about something and when Mrs Salty told her what she wanted to hear, (not the actual truth) then she calmed down. So did Mrs Salty lie?

Salty, I relate a true story. Wife's father had dementia due to alzheimers. He didn't have a clue where he was. I decided one to day to talk to him in Cockney, that rhyming language we grew up with. He was alert for about 1/2 hour. then said he was going up street to mum's. I let him go. Within seconds he came back into house, slammed the door and sat down moping. I asked what was wrong. He said, "som'un nicked me bike!"

I asked him where he left his bike. He answered, "Outdoors agin t' ouse!" So, I said, "You should know never t'leave bike outdoors in East London."
"Ya," 'e said. And that was end of conversation. He was back into sitting in a chair staring at space.

I will chance the "lie" to give the man a few minutes of seeming sanity.

    Cheers,

    Jim

If a door was left open and my parakeet got out in the winter, is it murder or birder?

The op asks if it is a sin to lie to pets, probably not, they are pets, not human beings. This is a sin though, not using the brain God gave us to exercise common sense.

Since not all "lying" is a sin (as evidenced throughout Scripture...David and Jonathan, Hagar and the Israelite spies to name a couple), it is the intent behind not telling the truth that is a sin.

It's not a sin to lie to a cat.

Since they are inherently evil, the truth is not in them.

that`s what I think too, and that is why I agree that Jim 1999 was right to talk to his father-in-law as he did. Jims intention was to comfort, with no malicious intent.
When my dear father was dying he asked when he would go home, I told him "soon ,Dad when it gets a bit warmer weather." Dad went home but not to our house, he went to be with Jesus.
