    Isa 40:22 ESV
    (22) It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in;

    Could this be used to say the Bible records the earth as round? Has the Hebrew word chûg ever been used to mean "orb" or "sphere"?

    H2329
    חוּג
    chûg
    khoog
    From H2328; a circle: - circle, circuit, compass

    I have heard that this verse motivated Christopher Columbus to sail, believing God's word that the earth was indeed spherical...

    All the learned of the time of Columbus knew that the earth was spherical and they even had access to the determination of its size by Aristarchus. Columbus thought it was much small than that and therfore headed off thinking he had enough supplies to make the smaller trip. But it wasn't smaller, Aristarchus had it right. But it wasn't just empty in that extra space, either, so he lucked out . . .
