When the drum comes in, I walk out. I don't mind some contemporary music, but I can't stand drums in the sanctuary. If I want a rock concert, I will go to a rock concert,,they bang louder.....sometimes.

    Cheers,

    Jim

On the contrary, i believe that songs sung in apostate churches will continue to slide further and further from bible doctrine. We live in the end times.

Are you saying that churches that use CCM in their worship services are wrong? That the Baptist Hymnal is THE one and only songbook?

I have the Jesus record; it is by far one of the best.
Our youth choir adapted one of the songs (That Where I Am) so they could sing it at church, and the congregation liked it, even the die-hard "that ain't my grandpa's music" bunch.

It espouses a theology that is not accepted in my circles, that's all. I am a pre-trib, pre-mil ifb'er. All of the lyrics of the song speak at best of "post trib" rapture, and a total hodge-podge of theology.

I opt not to sing songs with lyrics that run counter to my theology. Hence my classification. If it does not conflict with your theology, then you make your own choices. Same with many of the more recent CCM songs.

Than again, there's plenty of Songs in the hymnal that are full of the same covenant post trib amill theology as well, people just don't pay attention to the words because the music fits their definition of God honoring music.

    "Joy to the World"
    "Rejoice the Lord is King"

Than there is the classic Bible trashing

    "Faith of our Fathers"

    and many more

This really has little to do with the CCM debate, but Rich Mullins performed at my church 3 months before his fatal accident. At the time I was contemplating a decision about a high-risk surgery I needed, and there was a moment during that concert that my decision was made. It was when he sang the words, "If I stand, let me stand on the promise that You will see me through -- If I can't, let me fall on the grace that first brought me to You." To those who think the music itself, absent the words, conveys a message: In this case that's quite silly. At any rate, I had the surgery and recovered well; that's far from a 'miracle,' of course, but the small push of faith and confidence was there from the moment in that song.

That night was also memorable in that, about 8 minutes before the scheduled time, Rich came out alone, in bare feet and pants that came down just below his knees, and said this is going to be the first public performance of his newest song, You Did Not Have a Home. So that was already a concert to remember even before it actually started... and the circumstances only a short time afterword made assurance more sure that it would never be forgotten by those who were there.

I'm just saying that end times churches will slide further and further from true bible doctrine, and one of the contributors (or indicators?) will be the doctrines in the songs sung in the church.

2 Timothy 4:3-4 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

So you're saying that Contemporary Christian Music is a contributing factor?

We live in the end times. </font>[/QUOTE]i hope i'm not sounding evasive here but i was not referring to CCM, per se. That was not the direction intended when i challenged what was said that the songs that are not glorifying GOd will fade away, as in it will be filtered out by the churches and rejected.

I challenged this because i believe the bible says that in the end times, churches/ people will draw further and further away from bible truth and cling to lies. So i don't see that churches will have the kind of discernment to reject songs that don't really glorify God.

I guess what is implied is that the newer songs will be doctinally inaccurate. Yes, that would be consistant with scripture.
Is music a tool of Satan to bring about erosion of bible truth, i believe yes. But there are multiple factors involved too, like the hardness of people's hearts and choosing the world's ways above God's ways.

    thanks.

    Apologies, Su.

I probably should have stated that the music which is not of God will fade away from the churches which hold on to biblical doctrine and who are sincerely worshipping God.

On Easter Sunday, as we got ready to sing an old hymn, the electric guitar and drum machine (newly added) started in with some pretty awful boom, boom, boom.... and in between each verse, boom, boom, boom. What usually is a hymn that reminds us of the cross, turned into a hymn where people in the three rows ahead of me were giggling, snickering, pretending to be Indians........

Just give me the old stuff and a FEW of the newer praise songs! I love the old stuff!

Looks like someone needs to learn the appropriate time and way to use those instruments. When used properly, they can be a wonderful addition.
When someone is doing it just to be heard, it will take away from the service.

I agree wizofoz. Our son, Jon (26), is a drummer. I hesitated to say anything at church because I don't want it to seem I'm wanting HIM to play.

Bad sound tho! I'm not kidding. Drum machine with built in beats that don't fit... the organ and piano were trying to keep up..... BAD sound!

I have worked with several drummers in church music ministry. There are some really good drummers out there who are mindful of what a music ministry needs to help compliment the music. And there are some look-at-what-I-can-do drummers out there as well.

We were at a church and the drummer at the time bought in his own set. Every service he worked a drum solo or at least a big run. I asked if he could tone it down and he left the music team. I found a highschool kid in the church who played drums in the band and was serious about learning and playing. He had the "finesse' that we needed. He was not overpowering and had no need to show off.

That is a mouthful. And sadly, these churches are getting fewer and farther between. The MUSIC is proliferating; the godly church with strong DOCTRINE is waning.

Is it any wonder that Jesus asked that, at His return, would there be ANY faith left on earth?

Great message last night at church right on this topic

Pastor basically said, Who really cares which "style" of music you are singing, the real problem is that neither "style" can create true worship, which comes from the heart, and is a matter of obedience, not "touchy feeliness"

His opinion is that changing your worship service style to "make" people more worshipful, doesn't work, at least not when we are discussing true worship.

I have no problem with praise songs, choruses, contemporary styled music, but it is the motivation that concerns me. Many churches have taken the attitude that by changing to a contemporary style, they can fill their building, become more seeker-friendly, whatever, when really they need to teach the importance of true worship, and get off the style discussion. Appropriateness is very important, and many different styles can be used effectively in worship, but contemporary styles do not create true worship, just as traditional worship songs do not. It comes from the heart

P.S. What about people who are deaf, or mute, can they worship even if they cannot enjoy or perform music. Is Music Essential to true worship, or simply A tool for worship. thoughts anyone?

I guess my main point is

    "It's only music Dad!" ;)

Nothing to do with true worship!
