I have long contended that Jack was a false teacher probably wishing he had a glass of lemonade right about now.

It is easy to land blast a man who is not alive to stand and face his accusers. I feel sorry for those who feel it necessary to do so!

    Amen Peggy!

We have had so many threads running this deceased man down, it's pathetic. Let him rest in peace.

When I have won as many souls to the Lord as Jack Hyles and his ministries, then I might have the right to criticize him.

The people who are still buying his tapes are doing so because they choose to listen to them.

Ben: You are a new member; why not take a look at some of the many threads already on here about Jack Hyles. You are beating a dead horse. This has been hashed ad nauseum.

Neither the people who like him, nor the people who do not like him are going to change their minds because of your thread.

BTW, First Baptist Church in Hammond, IN is celebrating 116 years this year and still growing at a phenomenal rate. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Sue. it is sad, I can't think of anywhere else that I have disagreed with any of your posts, but we part company here and I hope that you, and everyone else, like minded will look at this man in a different light.
Blackbird, one and all, Go here also:
    www.rapidnet.com/~jbeard/bdm/exposes/hyles/errors.htm
    Excerpts:
How to make God your slave! (A word-of-faith error)
    Prayed TO his dead mother.
Prayed for his dead father in hopes of lessening his suffering in hell. (A Romanism error)
Fallen man is on the same level as animals. (An evolutionists error)
Sin does not need to be repented of, only forgotten.
KNOWN to have used graphic sexual language in his sermons.
Adultery is not a sin, just a "mistake"
Perhaps most frightening of all was that he demanded absolute loyalty among his associates, even to the point of commiting suicide for him. I'm sure we all remember Jim Jones.
It is true, he is no longer with us and cannot defend himself. But neither is Charles Russell, Joseph Smith and their kind still with us, but we do (and should!) criticize their work and sayings.
He sounds like a wolf in sheeps clothing Sue.
As for a church having, "Phenomenal growth": are they Feeding sheep, or amusing goats? C.H. Spurgeon

It seems I should have done a search for what others have said here on the Baptist Board about Jack Hyles before I wrote the above post, not after.
Diane wrote a very good post on Jack Hyles back on Feb.14 and gave the exact same link that I just gave. One thing she said was a classic:
"I've seen his thoughts on wife swapping. Can you say Jimmy Swaggart?"
We did well making her BB member of the year!

I sense that if a well researched and accurate report on a false teaching or teacher was mixed with Peggy's heart, the report itself would hit its intended mark more accurately.

Watchman: There is probably NO ONE on this board who agrees with every single post that another member posts....that does not stop them from being friends, and they are still brothers and sisters in Christ. We will just agree to disagree on this one. ;)

Have any of you met Jack Hyles? Attended a service at his church? Had children attend his college?

I can answer yes to all three of the above questions. I will not be dishonest and say that I agree with everything he preached; but to say he preached a false doctrine, in my opinion, is not a true statement. He always held to the five fundamentals of the Baptist faith.

My children, who attended his college (and are sheep-not goats), are doing quite well. My son is a Pastor and my daughter still attends First Baptist with her husband and family (she got her MRS. degree there). [IMG]

Jack Hyles was a man one either loved or hated and no one is going to change their minds about how they felt about him...one way or the other.

    Blessings,

I do not have to win a single person to Christ to be able to judge his horrific theology by Scripture.

His so-called conversions are not the test as to whether or not he is a false prophet.

He was the classic easybelievism, 1 2 3 pray after me guy.

His gospel was way off base, therefore his infinite conversions are all questionable.

I don't have to meet satan to know he is really evil either.

I'm sure lemonade isn't needed where Dr. Hyles is. Why would you need water when you have drank from the well ? "you'll never thirst again" [IMG]

    BTW,
I read the cut and paste job posted about Dr. Hyles. It is ridiculous! Anyone can defame another person, preacher, etc. by posting little remarks supposedly said or preached about. I did not see any actual sermon, or proof! My former Pastor you to say all the time : listen carefully to what I am going to say, I don't want anyone to leave here saying I said something I didn't! I put NO stock in that site!
    In Christ,

For example, seven Hyles-affiliated churches from 1984-1993 have been rocked by child molestation scandals (San Diego; North Sharon, MI; Petersburg, VA; Anniston, AL; Monroe, LA; Beaumont, TX; and Hyles own church in Hammond). From 5/16/93-5/20/93, Detroit television station WJBK-TV aired a five-part exposé on Hyles and various associated ministries. Following are the "low-lights" of that series:

    (a) A.V. Ballenger, a deacon and bus route driver at Hyles' First Baptist Church Hammond, was convicted in March of 1993 (and sentenced in July of 1993 to five years in jail) of molesting a seven year old girl. (This crime occurred in a Sunday School room of the church! Incredibly, after conviction, but prior to sentencing, Ballenger was allowed to resume his FBCH bus route!) The highlight of the sentencing hearing was the testimony of three young women. Each was molested by Ballenger when she was a child, and in each case, before age seven. Jack Hyles, who testified on Ballenger's behalf, defiantly declared the outcome of the trial null and void, claiming that the courts had no jurisdiction in this matter. Hyles told the girl's parents, "Deacon Ballenger just likes little girls."

    (b) Hyles' protégé Earl Reeves, pastor of Lighthouse Baptist Temple in San Diego, served eight years in prison for molesting young women and grade school girls from his congregation.

    (c) Hyles-Anderson Bible College grad and Calvary Park Baptist Church's (Petersburg, VA) youth pastor, Jeffrey Jerrell, pleaded guilty to having sex with eleven young girls from his congregation.

    (d) David Hyles, Jack Hyles' son, had affairs with at least 19 different women at Miller Road Baptist Church in Garland, Texas, during the time he pastored there. (He was dismissed when a janitor found photos of Hyles having sex with a deacon's daughter.) Back in the Chicago area (Bolingbrook, IL), and after David's divorce from his wife, David was cohabitating with Brenda Stevens. Brenda posed for pornographic pictures in Adam and Chicago Swingers magazines (in an advertisement for group sex) during the time she and David were living together. After David married Brenda, Brenda's 17-month-old son by a previous marriage was found battered and dead at the Hyles' home. The police still consider the case a murder and continue to view David and Brenda as prime suspects. At the coroner's inquest in 1985, Brenda was a no-show, while David Hyles pleaded the Fifth Amendment. [David and Brenda Hyles later conceived a son, and named him Jack David Hyles. In March of 1999, Brenda Hyles ran him over with the family car, killing the 5-year-old boy. Brenda claimed that Jack David had fallen out of the car and she could not avoid running over him (3/25/99, St. Petersburg Times).] In June of 2003, it was reported that David Hyles had been kicked out of another church (Pinellas Park Baptist in the Florida Keys), over a 9-woman sex scandal this time. Nevertheless, he still keeps a full itinerary of speaking to churches on Sunday School growth.

    - In the years since the WJBK-TV exposé, other criminal sexual misconduct scandals involving current or former Hyles-trained/-employed men have come to light. Some cases were more egregious than others, but none more appalling than the case of Joseph Combs. Combs was an extremely popular Hyles-Anderson College faculty member up until the mid-1980s. He left to start a church in Tennessee. The following is a summary account (from a Blountville, Tennessee newspaper, March 2001) of a criminal case involving Combs and his wife:

Combs, 51, and his wife, Evangeline Combs, 50, were sentenced to 114 years and 65 years in prison, respectively, for enslaving and abusing a girl (Esther Combs, now 22) they raised after taking her from an Indiana orphanage. The couple, who took the girl from the orphanage in 1978, but never adopted her, were convicted in March of 2001 of especially aggravated kidnapping. Joseph Combs also was convicted of aggravated assault, aggravated perjury, seven counts of rape, and one count of aggravated rape. Evangeline Combs also was convicted of four counts of aggravated child abuse. According to court records, Evangeline Combs often pulled out chunks of Esther's flesh with pliers. Joseph Combs once wrapped a rope around Esther's neck and draped her over his back until she passed out. There are more than 400 permanent scars on Esther's body resulting from the physical abuse inflicted by her parents.

We bring up this case not to imply that Hyles should be deemed guilty by association, but to point out the gross nature of the immorality and perversion that continues to be revealed among Hyles-trained men. One must ask, is Combs the type of man who is naturally attracted to Hyles' schools and/or FBCH, or does a man's training and associations there foster this immoral behavior?

To bring the public record up to date, there are also the William and Andy Beith cases:

William S. Beith, a Hyles-Anderson College grad, founded Liberty Baptist Church in Lake Station (formerly East Gary), Indiana, and later was founder and principal of Liberty Baptist Academy (a private "Christian" school with about 160 students). He was forced to resign from the school in 1998 after being arrested for public indecency for soliciting a male undercover police officer for oral sex. (Under the state's deferred prosecution program, he pleaded-out for probation and counseling.) His son, William "Andy" Beith, took over as principal in 2000. It did not matter to the Academy board that Andy had been arrested in 1990, while still a teenager, and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor for exposing himself to a 15-year old girl. The younger Beith also attended HAC. In May of 2001, Andy Beith, single and 28 years old at the time, took a car owned by Liberty Baptist Church and left the state with an 11 year old black girl who was a student at the Academy. The subject of a nationwide manhunt, Beith was arrested several days later in Las Vegas. He admitted to having sex with the child on numerous occasions, and said he planned to marry the girl and have children with her. Beith was charged by federal authorities with coercing and enticing a minor, and transporting a minor across state lines to engage in sexual activity. He was convicted in 2002, and while awaiting sentencing was held in Chicago's Men's Correctional Center under 24-hour solitary lock-down. In May of 2003, Andy Beith was sentenced to 15 years in prison. It was the maximum allowed. (Even the minimum sentence would have been 12 years and 7 months in prison.) Beith received credit for the two-plus years he served as this case worked its way through the system; he could earn good-time credit. But Beith would serve about 85% of his time even when time served and good-time credit is applied. Beith also received three years of supervised release after his imprisonment, and was ordered to pay $19,340 in restitution to the Lake County Division of Family and Children. [The school and church are now run by Beith Sr.'s son-in-law Darryl Crotz (married to William Beith's eldest daughter Cindy), both of whom are also HAC graduates.]~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Simply state the obvious: Jack Hyles probably did more damage to the cause of fundamental Baptist than anyone in the last 100 years.

Sad man. Sad ministry. Sad sycophants who won't open their eyes to the evil. Sad blind followers who can't admit the emperor has no clothes. Sad legacy in a son following in his father's footsteps.

But we've discussed this all before. [IMG]

Daniel David: Are you saying that NO good Preachers, Pastors, Missionaries, or Godly women came out of Hyles-Anderson College and all who attended his church or college should question their salvation???

As far as the 123 easy believism, I attended one of his soulwinning classes about 25 years ago and, let me tell you, there was no 123 about it!

That web site is trash. Just because it is in print does not make it so. Of course, I'm sure you believe everything you read in the newspapers also...

Blackbird. I have no idea why your filter keeps you from this sight. It is a sight that certainly has nothing to do with smut, or whatever. But I have heard that even the jesus-is-lord websight has complained that some of these new filters will block their websight. I can get through to it with the GE Smatfilter at work just fine.
Sue. First, thanks for the reassurance that one disagreement does not ruin a friendship.
Second, as to my use of the Spurgeon sermon title:
"Feeding Sheep, or Amusing Goats?". You had a comment in your post that your children were not goats. Now that puts me in the same position as a fellow in a well-known joke:
A man, who had just landed a new job was on his way to work in a carpool, which, among others, included his new boss. On the way the conversation got onto experiences in College and Fraternities and Sororities. The new man stated "The only ones in the Greeks were (harlots) and football players." His new boss snapped angrilly, "My wife was a Greek!!!", the poor guy could only say, "Oh really, what team did she play for?"
In no way did I mean to imply that anyone, in particular, is a goat because of being associated with a fast-growing Church. I just wanted to point out that there may be some Churches using unbiblical means to grow their attendance. RATHER that is the case here, I have no idea.
Third, back to Mr Hyles one more time, then I'll let it go: Leaven. A little okay? Enough evidence has been presented here to demonstrate that he had more than a little leaven.

    David Mark-
I am a little confused wether you were paying me a compliment or trying to say I wouldn't believe it even if I had hard evidence!?!
If it were a compliment, I guess I am not used to them on BB, I seem to usually be going against the grain! [IMG] ;) [IMG]

Sue, your personal experience is not the standard of truth for me. It really shouldn't be for you either, but...
