I know this is a stupid question for many but im really determined to understand the full meaning of the bible and I guess it starts from step 1 right. haha
What does it mean "Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham"?

It thought Jesus Christ was the son of God and Joseph

    Thank you and God Bless

Jewish tradition gave the family lineage of the father to each child. Joseph came from the lineage of both David and Abraham, plus 2 prostitutes.

    However...
Quoted from The Hebraic Roots of Christianity by Phil Luna

This actually is referring to the ancestor's and not saying David was the 'father' of Jesus but one of the ancestor's of Christ.

I wish I knew your real name but I'll call you BOB.

You said: What does it mean "Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham"?

Your name is Bob. Your father was Ralph. Ralph's daddy was Joe. Joe's father was Homer. Homer's dad was George. George was born to Mary and Bud. Bud was the son of Robert and Louise.....

Bob is the son of all those guys... they are all a part of Bob! When the Bible tracks Jesus back to David and Abraham, it's showing how the Old Testament came true! Just listing grandparents like I did for 'Bob'.

Does that explain it better? Let me know if not!

If I may add to what Diane wrote, you will find many
other areas in the Bible in which one is called the
"son of," the "father of," the "brother of" someone
or something, like father of harp players, son of
perdition, brother of a particular person. This does
not always indicate any direct familial relationship
    at all.

In Hebrew tradition, one calls the originator of an
idea the father of both the idea and of the students
of the idea. The students of the idea call one
another brothers (and today, sisters as well),
because they share in the ideas in that class and
usually propagate them. The teacher of the idea
calls the students his children -- sons and
    daughters.

Another concept of such names includes house-
holds or persons who may or may not be actually
related. In biblical times, one house often incor-
porated those from more than one family, usually,
but not necessarily, related. In that household, the
eldest male was usually the head of the house-
hold and was, as the head, the father of it. The
young people in that house were called his sons,
whether or not they were actual sons, nephews,
whatever. Those within the household were called
brothers and sisters, whether or not they were.

Remember when our Lord said not to seek the
place of being the rabbi or teacher, etc.? He was
warning them, along with other ideas, about the
fact that with the titles come seious responsibility
-- responsibilities which one may come to regret
taking on, may find themselves incapable of main-
taining, etc. Too many people want to be the
"father" when they haven't the credentials; there is
no shame in taking one's rightful place as a "son."

Sorry...1 more question if i may.
It says Jesus is the son of God right? but then it also says Jesus is the son of Joseph. I know Joseph is the biological father of Jesus but what does it mean when they say that Jesus is the son of God?
    Thank you God Bless

Joseph is NOT the biological father of Jesus. Joseph raised Jesus as his son. Our daughter had a baby at 19. Her Dad and I adopted him. He calls us Mom and Dad. Jesus was born a human baby but His true 'birth father' was God.

Can I ask if you are a guy and how old you are? Might make it easier when I answer.

I graduated from seminary and pastored. But I can say that I still have a lot to learn. If we take the approach to learning as a child does we will never stop learning and growing.

So many people at the end of their life declare, "One thing I know Jesus still loves me."

    RB,
I am 15 years old. I have known Jesus as my personal savior since I was 7 1/2 That is half my life. I still have questions. Although all my friends at church come to me for Bible answers if the question is a hard one I usually send them to my pastor. I would tell you if you have lots of questions sit down and talk with your pastor sometime. I know my pastor loves to sit down and discuss the bible. He is like a grandfather to me. Since I really never had one, he has been filling in a little. He is honestly my hero.

you know those really boring chapters that just have so and so begat so and so? that's Jesus' lineage on both sides

the reason why Joseph and Mary traveled to Bethlehem was because the cencus was taken in the MAN's hometown... Bethlehem is the "City Of David" DAVID is in both Mary and Joseph's lineage... and Abraham was in David's lineage

technically we're all related to one another as Adam and Eve were the first and only people ;)

    just food for thought ;)
