The people were the ones who introduced "works." Jesus just took the term and cast it in another light, a spiritual one. That's the irony.

Jesus is simply saying to the people rather than working for physical food, the work of God, or what God requires, is faith in his Son to save.

Not physical work for material sustenance, but faith in Jesus as the bread of life for spiritual sustenance, is the work of God.

The scriptures themselves show believeing is not a work.

Rom 4:5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

To believe actually means to cease from work. An example, you are in an airplane with a parachute. You are told to jump but you are afraid. Finally, you decide to trust the parachute, to believe it will get you safely to the ground. So you jump. You completely abandon all works you could do and rely 100% on the parachute. You do not flap your arms and try to fly like a bird (would't help if you did). No, you cease from all effort of your own and completely rely or depend upon the parachute to get you down safely.

Just because Jesus did not correct those who asked what works they must do does not mean he was saying faith is a work.

To believe on Jesus means to cease from anything you can do to save yourself. It means to cast yourself on Jesus and depend upon him 100% to save you as he promised he would.

Prov 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

Here believeing is descibed as leaning. To believe on Jesus means to lean upon him, to commit yourself to him, to risk him. If he does not hold you up, then you will fall. But that will never happen to anyone who leans upon Jesus.

Actually in verse 27 Jesus introduced ERGON "WORK".

    I agree:

    John 6:27

27 Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him."
    NKJV

Do not labor for the food which perishes, BUT FOR THE FOOD WHICH ENDURES.

Yes work that GOD calls faith, which we do.

    WINMAN WROTE:

Romans shows how keeping the work of the Law does not merit salvation, that is the context of Romans 4, 5 and so on.

    Rom 3:28

28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith apart from the deeds of the law.
    NKJV

    WINMAN:
According to Romans 3, 4 man is justified by faith apart from the works of the law.

If faith is a condition in order to receive the blessing from God then salvation is not unconditional,God requires faith from us, it is something we do when we understand what Christ has done fro us.

I am justified by faith apart from the works of the law, just like all those Paul mentions, but that does not mean that faith and repentance and whatever else God required them to do in order to receive the blessing from God.

You're right about "work" coming from Jesus first.
