How could a Jew tell a person was a Samaritan by just looking at them?
    and vice versa.

In John 4, how did the woman at the well know Jesus was Jewish?

    Probably the standard three.

Tribal attributes (Jesus did not look like a Samaritan - He did not look like family).
Clothing (Jesus' clothes did not look like Samaritan clothing).
Dialect (Jesus did not sound Samaritan).

    IMO

Now for the verse visa - It might have been more difficult for a Jew to tell a samaritan from a Jew by tribal attributes.

Clothing designer that they did not share, yes. Dialect, yes. But the tribal attributes amongst the Jews probably varied greatly even then.
