Arrrggggg. I'm not saying that he is talking about being called into ministry here. Again, I was giving a example of how we use words in modern day. Why is that so difficult to understand?

Your quote by Clarke is actually helpful, why is it a term to label Christians when all are called?
Why do we call those in the Army recruits when the Army virtually tries to recruit all able bodied students? Why do we only refer to those who respond to the calling to ministry as those called, when God may have called many who haven't obeyed that call? Different languages use different terminologies and figures of speech. We don't typically refer to Christians as saints today. Many today would say, "Were not saints, were sinners who have been forgiven." Why? Because the term "saint" carries a certain connotation of being "perfect" to us.

You can't forget that earlier in the same passage Paul had already stated: "21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe," which shows that Paul is talking about those who choose to believe being the ones who have answered the call.
