about 5 hours ago. (The Passion)

Let me say that I was deeply convicted as to my own spiritual laziness and sin.

I have to give the movie a critique from two perspectives.

    1. As a movie buff, I thought it was a brilliant piece of art. Significant and quality art isn't always easy to visually digest. But nonetheless, brilliant and gifted art is important to a culture.

For instance, in the 1970's, the photograph of the naked Vietnamese girl running for her life and crying from multiple burns is an important piece of work. It moved people to compassion. That photograph isn't easy to look at.

    2. As a Christian, I was moved to tears. I cried through the entire film. Not sobbing, racking tears, but quiet, constant, and make-up melting tears. All through the entire film.

I will tell you what "got" me.

If you haven't seen the film and you intend to, this is a spoiler.

When Jesus was brought before the Romans to be scourged, the guards had to think awhile before they decided what instruments of torture to use. They first used canes.

Before the first sadistic blows, they bent the canes back and forth and the camera perused their faces.

They were the faces of madmen and evil. I knew what was coming. And I was devastated and angry.

There was a purposeful wait between the selection of the canes and the first blows. There was time to think. And I was convicted.

When the first blows hit Jesus, all I could think of was...

..."yeah, I know which sin in my life that one was."

    Another blow.

    "Oh. I remember that one."

    Another blow.

"God, forgive me for being the reason for these injuries."

It was awfully ( with the emphasis on "awful" ) hard to watch and yet, I had to watch. I had to be reminded that it was my own filth and sin that made Jesus give up his own life.

    I was deeply convicted.

I will never partake of the Lord's Supper again in a flippant or nonchalant manner.

I will never hear the words, "...and by His stripes we are healed", again without truly understanding what they mean.

The suffering of Jesus and my own unworthiness was made real today.

I do not feel depressed nor upset. But I do feel that my relationship with Jesus is back in perspective.

It's not about me. It's about Him.

It's not about a movie nor an actor nor a producer nor a director.

It's about not even about a story from the Bible.

    It's about Jesus.

    Jesus, the King.

    Jesus, the Atonement,

    Jesus, the Sacrifice.

    Jesus, the Lord.

    Peace-

Scarlett, Thank you. I'm sitting here in tears because I felt the same way and just wish those who disagree with the movie could understand how it touched my heart. I'm so glad YOU understand.

I, too, will never be able to partake of the Lord's Supper without remembering exactly what Jesus endured for me.

    Scarlett,

Thanks for the reminder. I want to encourage you that even though some may rip apart your post, I agree with you. If one life was changed, and I know mine was, than I believe it was worth it. There are several people that I know of that had similar thoughts after seeing this film. Thank you for putting it in an eloquent and thought-provoking way.

I am sorry that you were upset during the thirty two caning strokes that "Jesus" received in the Passion movie, however, according to scripture it never occured. This holywood exaggeration was drawn from one of the extra biblical or mystical sources to increase the drama.

Many movie goers were also upset when they shot Old Yeller, and when Bambi's mother died, but neither one of those occured either, and like the many non-scriptural scenes from the passion, they were used to increase the dramatic effect. I hope Mr Gibson is satisfied, because the secular world is having a field day with this. One guy stated that while watching this movie, one would consider "What Would Rambo Do"

For other interesting information on the movie:

I hope seeing this film motivates you to dive deeper into your Bible for the real and true story...

...but, of course it is "sanitized" and much less violent than Mel's imaginative, illusory, and irreverent treatment of God's plan of salvation.

Mel had to add more imaginary violence and gore because, well...that's just the way he is.

There is a real living RESURRECTED and gloriously ASCENDED Jesus, who sent us the Holy Spirit on PENTECOST, to enable us to do even greater works (JOHN 14:12), as Christ works within us in preaching, healing and delivering lost souls...

...this is "the rest of the story," that was not violent enuff to suit Mel's bizarre tastes.

I have not ripped apart this believer's post, just the movie itself and the horrid little freak who made it.

How is it that this movie proclaims Jesus as Lord? As King? As Atonement? Is there any notification that God decreed this; that Christ gave his life? And for the joy that was set before him?

This film really takes this away from the Sovereign purpose of HIS coming in the flesh; and re-installs human emotion as substitute for the Godhead. There is the purpose, because of our sin (no glory for God there); there is the flesh (what mother wouldn't wish to take her son's place? btw, he is not Mary's son, her child, but not son, Isaiah said a son is given a child is born); there is emotional conviction (removal of the Holy Spirit).

Yeah, great artistry, no doubt. Power of God, no way.

I promised that I wasn't going to post anymore in the Passion threads---but here I am with a question that needs to be answered--

You can PM me or just post below me---I'm not the least bit embarrassed to be "told off" if thats what you want to do--- but ---

At what point did Jesus actually become a "curse"--not a trick question---

at what point did Jesus actually begin "paying" for our sins---

Did He bare our sins before the cross---down that Catholosized Via Dolorosa---or did He bare our sins ON the cross?

at what point did man's chastisement(which was finite) end and the Father's chastisement for our peace(which was infinite) begin?

Just a friendly reminder that "the preaching of the CROSS is to them that perish foolishness but unto us which are saved it is the power of God."

    Your Southern Baptist preaching buddy,
    Brother David

    FYI,
I also opposed the WWJD bracelets and other fad jewelry.

For some odd reason I thought it was better for lost people to know what Jesus did do than to have them trying to answer that question philosophically.

WWJD? where is this works based fad now?

    Go figure

    Hey all,

I'm not going to argue with anyone here.

Obviously, there are people here who hated the film when they saw it. That's your free will as a Christian viewer.

All I as it that you please don't compare it to Bambi and Ol' Yeller or Rambo.

And there are those like me who were convicted by it. I felt ashamed every time his flesh was torn and cut by the scourging and yes, the beating that was incorporated in the film.

Just as you think that I am wrong in my convictions, I think you are wrong to attack this particular film.

But, I'm not going to fight with you over someone's interpretation of the suffering of Jesus.

    Peace-

I think the comparison to Rambo was a question one viewer said kept coming to his mind. Not a comparison by anyone here.

Scarlett, I have not seen the film, but from what I have read on a number of threads here, I am thinking that the horror of the beatings and the crucifixion probably should have been offset by at least a closing minute or two depicting the glory of the Resurrection. That might have put things into a bit more of a perspective?

The Roman Catholic cross always has the crucified Jesus on it, but, in contrast to that, that is not where the story ends. Maybe it should not have been where the film ended either?

However that being said, I'm glad for the positive effect it has had on you and a number of other Christians where the impact of sin and the remembrance involved in the Lord's Supper is concerned. God bless you.

I, for one, like the What Would Jesus Do concept from IN HIS STEPS book.

If more people asked themselves, "What would Jesus do in this situation?" we wouldn't have so much sin, hypocrisy and false doctrine in the churchianity crowd or in the world.

I will debate the WWJD Revolution until my tie falls off into my mashed pew potatoes and gravey.

Sorry Shag nasty or whatever, gonna have to report your hostile post. Chill. "Freedom of speech, with politeness."

ShagNappy---I resent the call of a fellow brother being called a "*******"---you go on and apologize to the brother before you get a whistle blown in your direction! OK??

I'm gonna be your brother---its that brothers don't call brothers what you called S & T!!

    Your friend,
    Brother David

I personally edited out the words between quotations---and I call for ShagNappy to publically apologize to Spirit and Truth---In my opinion, there was no hostility being fired at Scarlet O from anybody---IMHO
