(Undated-AP) -- Former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating is
quitting as head of the commission examining the sex-abuse
    scandal in the Catholic Church.
Keating has been blasted by Los Angeles Cardinal Roger
Mahony for remarking that some church officials have been hiding
and suppressing information like the Mafia. Mahony, quoted in the
Los Angeles Times, called Keating's comment "the last straw."
Keating's spokesman says the criticism "hastened his
decision" to resign, but he's been talking about the possibility
    for several months.
The Reverend Thomas Reese of the Jesuit weekly America,
says Keating's departure is -- quote -- "another stumble on the
way to cleaning up the bishops' reputation."
And representatives of abuse victims say they're saddened
    by Keating's decision.
