Hello, I was reminded that a certain word I used has a different connotation in the USA.

I wish to apologize if it offended anyone, but assure you it is a common expression in East London......."keep your pecker up." It simply means to keep smiling,,,,,the connection,,a peck on the cheek being a kiss..the mouth..keep it turned up in a smile.

When I first came to this side of the pond, I was going to university and I had room to spare,,,,a three bedroom flat. There was a young lady who arrived rather late and at the cafe I offered to "bed her for the night." Well, she took offense and slapped my mush (face). It was two days later she apologized when she learned from another Brit that I was only offering her a place to sleep for the night.

Oh how English differs between the shores. I was once told that Americans like to hear Brit preachers and now I know why....it is like stand up comedy and you get your jollies free.

Cheers, and thank you for understanding,

    Jim

Jim: I've never heard "Uhaul," but there are places I haven't been.

BTW, "y'all" can be either singular or plural, depending on the context. "All y'all" is always plural.

"Y'all come in and have a sit-down. Ah'm fixinta whoop up a mess o' okrey 'n' some taters 'n' peas. We got plenty, so all y'all kin jest stay fer supper. The sweet tea's in th' icebox, 'n' we got some apple pah if ya'll are hungry before supper's fixt."

I can't speak for Southerners, because I'm not one.

I did, however, pick up certain speech patterns from grandparents born in Tennessee (Union part) and Alabama, and from my parents, neighbors and friends.

However, we can write perfectly standard American English, if there were any such thing today.

That dog won't hunt, Teresa. Besides, if'n we cain't talk funny, whut would ya'll Yankees have t' make fun of, less'n ya'll would a'listen to yerselfs? Eh?

By the grace of God, and the strong encouragement of a couple of dear ladies, I, too, check in as present.

Jim, I learned a lot of the lingo, though not enough to do more than stare, from a good Cary Grant movie, called Mr. Lucky. Oy, even now it's good for a jolly giraffe.

May His lovingkindness be upon you all today.

    David
