    A friend told me that his church was looking into changing into a "life groups" church. He asked me if this was a SBC program and I honestly did not know. Does anybody have any info on this program which includes doing away with sunday school.

    The purpose of Sunday School was to give people the opportunity to bring people to church and participate in non-threatening small groups to study the Bible . . . then they became 'schools' . . . and the drive to make them more cost effective made them big.

    Small groups (Life groups, teams, and hundreds of other names) offer the ability for a church to off site the small group study into people's homes . . . this accomplishes at least these three important things:

    1. It provides more people the opportunity to become leaders in the church;
    2. It provides a tamer and less threatening environment to bring people that are lost;
    3. It lowers the cost of Sunday School classrooms . . .

    God bless and welcome back!

    Our church is part of the SBC and they have lifegroups. It was explained to me that lifegroups give you a more personal feeling in Bible study compared to having a class od 15-20 a small lifegroup would consist of 4-7 people and usually meet a someones home for an hour or two in the evening. Now my old church had both Sunday school and lifegroups but it was a huge church.

    From what i have seen, Life Group is just another term for Sunday School since some people hear "Sunday School" and think of something that churches do for kids on Sunday morning.
