Is it a sin for a Christian man to have long hair? I talking about the kind of hair that Johnny Damon had when he played for the Redsox. I know the verses in the Bible that talk about men having long hair and women short, but I kind of feel that is talking about the particular culture in that community, not a definite rule for men of God. Thanks.

The Bible says it is a shame for a man to have long hair

But the argument will always be

    "What's the definition of LONG??"

I don't have no worries about ever being accused of HAVING long hair

    but

I suppose its too long when:

--it'll stall out the best electric Mule sheers on the market

--it can be rolled with women's curlers

--you've spent enough on hair spray to invest in the salon company instead

--you can repeat the episode of Absolem's misfortune

Since the bible doesn't say how long is long, or how short is short, how do we determine that? Mostly it is going to be personal opinion, which frequently is going to be treated like scripture, and used against others.

I believe that the all-powerful God of the universe has bigger fish to fry than worrying about the length of someone's locks. Why do we belabor this type of thing? Does it further God's work?

We already know what the Lord would have us do (1 Cor. 11:14-15). We just want the terms defined.

The LORD would have us shave Ransom's heathen head and give the proceeds to Locks of Love.

I would say I was "cutting up" but that might be construed as a terrible pun. So I won't. :D [IMG]

    ...or read Scripture in context.

I suppose that every woman that prays with their head uncovered (v. 5, 6, 13) is being disgraceful and dishonoring to God, too, and she should have all of her hair cut off.

Every man who wears a baseball cap is sinning (v. 7), too.

The LORD has done a pretty decent job of that already on his own . . .

I think the Lord would have us major on the majors. The length of a man, woman, or child's hair had nothing to do with the heart inside. That's what we should be concerned with: loving them and reaching out to them.

Now pastors, however, should be bald and clean shaven... (kidding!) [IMG] :D

I usually like the advice of my Pastor on any given grey area. "If you gotta ask "How long is long hair, or should a Christian drink, or should a lady wear a dress or (fill in the blank) then you can USUALLY take that as a pretty sure sign that God has put his finger on THAT ONE AREA in your own life."

And I would say that that is a pretty good and practical piece of advice.

That could also be a pretty sure sign that the pastor has put his finger on that area in your own life. And I would say that a pastor who wants to be the Holy Spirit is not for me.

This is the same old tired argument as the type of Christian music. People who worry about outward things really need a hobby.
