That is unbelievable. The officer called it in as a felony traffic stop, but told the driver he was “being detained” for a traffic violation.

That said, he should have followed their instructions.

    peace to you

Is it just me (my old eyes) or did he close the door with his arm when the officer opened it?

Anyway, interesting video. I wish we had more of a back story (and conclusion).

The Lt has the making of a no brainer lawsuit.

He did close the door after the officer opened it. He didn’t follow instructions.

We don’t know the back story; what led to the stop.

The police, on the other hand, were clearly over excited and gave contradictory commands. They told him to put his hands out the window and then commanded he turn off the car while his hands were out the window and then to get out of the car while he still had his seatbelt on and his hands out the window.

The body cam records the cop telling dispatch it was a “felony car stop”, but the same officer told the driver he was being “detained” for a traffic violation (even correcting himself when he first stated he was being “arrested”. You don’t “detain” for a simple traffic violation with weapons drawn. What led them to believe the man was a threat?

Additionally, when the man explained he was afraid to get out of the vehicle, the officer stated, “you better be, son!” Clearly belittling the man and akin to calling a grown man of African descent a “boy”.

I would like to know the back story and outcome as well.

    peace to you

Just saw on Fox that one cop has been fired and a lawsuit has been filed.

Couple hundred K would help ease the humiliation he went through.

    peace to you

From what I understand - they did not see a license place - and they put the lights on - but the road was dark.
His plan was to drive to a lighted location - ie the gas station - the cops took it as resisting arrest.
Looks like the cops possibly got a bit overzealous on this one.
If he had a phone he should have called 911 and said he would stop at a lighted location.

That's right. There appears to be no license tag. Very suspicious. Didn't the driver know?

The driver could have done better, but yes, the police messed up in any case. Giving mixed commands, then telling him he'd better be scared to get out? Not good at all. And then they maced him big time.

At least they didn't shoot him.

I can't make out the shape of any temp tag. Perhaps it's obscured by tinted glass?
