Anyone know about the status of Luther Rice regional accreditation? Its website identifies it as a candidate for accreditation by SACS!

According to SACSCOC, Luther Rice received candidate status on Sept. 3, 2020. Depending on their progress, candidacy status can last up to four years.

Is an MA in Apologetics from this school a legit credential in the field for scholarship, teaching, etc?

Most academic institutions require regionally accredited degrees for teaching. That said, if you are thinking about going on to get a PhD from a regionally accredited school it would probably be fine. Graduate degrees from non-regionally accredited schools can be tricky if someone is looking at teaching. LRU is nationally accredited (ABHE, TRACS) and they are a very good school.

So Luther Rice is accredited, but not accredited by a specific authority that it wants to be recognized by?

LRS has TRACS accreditation, but TRACS is not accepted in many cases by other schools. SACS on the other hand would offer full acceptance to their credits by everyone. The problem is that LRS has tried several times to gain SACS accreditation, but has not yet succeeded, for various reasons.

Is there anywhere these reasons are discussed?

In official public SACS reports. No idea where to find them, but probably through the SACS website with search for LRS.

    Dear Luther Rice Family,

It is my privilege to announce, on behalf of the Luther Rice College and Seminary Board of Trustees, administration, faculty, and staff that today December 8, 2020, Luther Rice College and Seminary was granted membership as an accredited institution by the Board of Trustees of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award baccalaureate, masters, and doctorate degrees

This exciting announcement is the result of many years of institutional planning, execution, and prayer among the Luther Rice Board of Trustees, administration, faculty, staff, students, donors, and alumni. SACSCOC accreditation will provide multiple benefits for Luther Rice students in the future, including opportunities for broader acceptance of transfer credits for post-Luther Rice work and recognition in the work place where a SACSCOC accredited degree is preferred or required.

Luther Rice continues to be in good standing with our two current accrediting agencies, Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS) and Commission on Accreditation of the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE).

I am grateful for God’s guidance and my colleagues’ efforts to accomplish this milestone.

    Serving Him,

    James Flanagan, Ph.D.

    President
