Politicians and radicals always come up with numbers to support their claim. I don't believe you Carpro unless you offer some proof and then it is only projected numbers which, in reality, mean very little.

Yes of course it's a projection. Nothing else is possible at this time, but I can tell that you are predisposed to discount as invalid whatever proof is offered, so why bother?

Are you that far behind other civilized western countries that if you provided health care for all its citizens, your taxes would increase by 50 %????

Goodness, I don't even pay that much in taxes and still enjoy the benefits. As a senior, I can even go to university with a 50% decrease in tuition, and our tuitions are well below your tuition fees to begin with.

Cheers, happy and prospering in Canada,

    Jim

What about the quality of the health care Jim? Do you think the quality suffers since the doctors basically don't compete? Do doctors still make big bucks?

What about elective surgery, does your system cover any?

I have never suffered for lack of care.

Elective surgery? Is it needed? Or just a face lift?

I wouldn't live in any other country, including my home of England.

I sure wouldn't live in the USA...I don't even visit there anymore in case I take ill.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Then you're wasting your money spent on insurance.

Now you tell us, just after we finished making the Welcome Jim from Canada sign. You know another Jim that might want to come?

    Please explain.

The average tax rate in Canada is much higher in Canada than in the U.S..

    Why?

It certainly can't be because of national defense expenditures.

I'm sick of the government telling me what to do. I say do away with the income tax and close all the military bases and fire all our military men and women and stop sending junk into outer space and if someone want to come to our country to invade us, then we'll all bear arms and kick their sorry butts.

No debate about healthcare is dollarless, so it inevitably follows that they can not be centsless.

"(b) In an emergency, you get taken to the local Accident and Emergency Dept (equivalent of the ER) and get seen straight away - and you don't have to worry about taking your check-book with you!"

    Good!

    Same here.

If you don't have the money, you don't have to pay the bill.

It is a myth that those in need of health care can't get it in the U.S. if they are poor and/or uninsured.

Perhaps the free market should be tried before saying it doesn't work?

The current system is heavily regulated with various insurance companies, underwriters, health care providers/organizations, and gov't agencies involved not to mention employers.

The answer to the delivery, quality, and cost problems isn't more gov't involvement. It is more consumer involvement. Regardless of how it is done, people have to perceive that it is their own money that is being spent to motivate them to make a "value" choice.

Beyond that, people whose personal health habits directly effect the cost of their insurance or medical costs incurred by them will make better choices yielding a more healthy society... reducing overall costs.

The worst word that can be associated to anything with a cost in America is "free". When Americans think something isn't costing them, they use it recklessly.

Europeans have an expectation of a higher level of gov't control in society. They are more likely to acknowledge that rationing may be necessary. American voters would very quickly vote out of office people who tried to limit their access or raise their taxes too much.

There is no "good" outcome for universal healthcare in America. We would either become even more enslaved to the gov't or else would go into national default.

Great article that rebuffs the notion America should try to be more like Europe. Unlike liberals' emotional appeals for more statism, it is based on cold hard truth.

I especially liked the last line: "A suggestion that we should be more like Europe is the same as one suggesting that we should be poorer."

Another gem: "Dr. Mitchell cites a comparative study by Timbro, a Swedish think tank, showing that European countries rank with the poorest U.S. states in terms of living standards, roughly equal to Arkansas and Montana and only slightly ahead of West Virginia and Mississippi."

Why do you spend money for health insurance? You never answered that question.
