The seven heads of the beast represent Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome, and the Holy Roman Empire, five of these seven heads of the beast coincides with the beasts of Daniel. I've no doubt (actually the bible confirms much of it) that in each epoch there was great tribulation, persecution, apostasy, famine, war, escape, victory for the saints, etc., all with the source being the enmity between the serpent and the woman (Gen 3:15;Rev 12). I would tend to place the scripture Icon quoted as being fulfilled 66-70 AD destruction of Jerusalem.

9 That which hath been is that which shall be; and that which hath been done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
10 Is there a thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been long ago, in the ages which were before us. Ecc 1

History runs in spirals, names faces places change, yet the same old conflict keeps occurring over and over again.

    ...all jmho of course...

Hey, that's pretty good! But no, haven't read him, the two that enlightened me were Joseph Seiss, Lutheran Historic Premil, and a brother Overby, Baptist Premil Historicist.

The whore is apostate Judaism, as 'Mystery Babylon', the Great Harlot, the mistress of kingdoms, the unfaithful wife of Jehovah:

26 Thou hast also committed fornication with the Egyptians, thy neighbors, great of flesh; and hast multiplied thy whoredom, to provoke me to anger.
28 Thou hast played the harlot also with the Assyrians, because thou wast insatiable; yea, thou hast played the harlot with them, and yet thou wast not satisfied.
29 Thou hast moreover multiplied thy whoredom unto the land of traffic, unto Chaldea; and yet thou wast not satisfied herewith.
32 A wife that committeth adultery! that taketh strangers instead of her husband! Ezek 16

....and those are just a very few of the OT passages referring to apostate Judaism as the unfaithful wife. She colluded with Rome to kill Christ:

Ye men of Israel....ye by the hand of lawless men did crucify and slay: Acts 2:22,23

And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all that have been slain upon the earth. Re 18:24

The word in the Greek -- the original language of The Revelation to John -- is semaino which means "to give a sign, or to make known." That's not symbolism. That's the factual events of the End Times being revealed to John, who then did the best he could, given he was looking 2,000 or more years into the future, to describe it.

And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graft them in again. Romans 11:23
They will get a "second chance" during the time of Jacob's Trouble.

Yeah, I know. (there's an old saying, sumthin about old dogs, that comes to mind here) :)

10 standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the strong city! for in one hour is thy judgment come. Rev 18

8 And their dead bodies lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified. Rev 11:8

27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he had stood before Jehovah:
28 and he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the Plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the land went up as the smoke of a furnace. Gen 19

2 for true and righteous are his judgments; for he hath judged the great harlot, her that corrupted the earth with her fornication, and he hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.
3 And a second time they say, Hallelujah. And her smoke goeth up for ever and ever. Rev 19

34 Therefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: some of them shall ye kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city:
35 that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous unto the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar.
36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation. Mt 23

24 And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all that have been slain upon the earth. Rev 18

OR, the RCC that you seek in the prophecy is found in the ten kings of the seventh head who 'made war with the Lamb' (the Church), and hateth the Harlot (apostate Jusaism) and made her desolate and eat her flesh and burn her with fire (read curses of Lev 26/Dt 28).

From Brother Overbey's book, 'A Brief Commentary On Daniel':

“The beasts representing the governments of Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome, (Rome is first ruled by the Caesars and then the Germanic tribes) have been presented describing them in a very general way......”

The ten horns represent kings and their kingdoms which will take over the kingdom of Rome. Ten Germanic tribes did this. They were the Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Vandals, Franks, Burgundians, Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Alamanni, and the Lombards.”

John’s use (actually it’s Christ's use) of the word ‘signified’ in Rev 1:1 is in the same sense that he used it in his gospel [Jn 12:32,33; 18:32; 21:18,19] meaning to symbolize. Christ did not speak plainly about the manner of death in these texts, but signified it with other than ‘literal’ language.

And he saith unto me, Seal not up the words of the prophecy of this book; for the time is at hand. Rev 22:10

You people blow my mind at how unabashedly, glibly, you disregard these explicit instructions and seal off the words of the prophecy and relegate all to the far distant future. In doing so you've shut yourselves off from some tremendous blessings from the scriptures and have fallen into the dispensational error.
