    The Chief priests had bribed the guards about the disciples stealing the body of Jesus.

    Then the priests go on to say that they will satisfy the Governor

    But would the Governor really care? He wanted Jesus released as it was.

    They lost the body. The guards could face death for dereliction of duty. It was more about embarrassing the empire than it was about Jesus.
