Those in Purgatory are saved. The suffering entailed in Purgatory (and most especially, now here on Earth!) in no way earns heaven. It is the application of Christ's redemption to our souls (i.e., sanctification).

As we are drawn out of this life and into direct union with Jesus, his fiery love and holiness burns away all the dross and impurities in our souls and makes us fit for life in the glorious, overwhelming light of God's presence and holiness.

This dross and impurity on our soul is the effects of sin, which has been forgiven (if it wasn't forgiven, then we would be in hell!). It's us washing our hands before we enter the eternal banquet of the lamb.

In his continued efforts to ignore the details of the points shown to refute the subject of Purgatory - Carson simply exposes further contradictions in the doctrine.

Imagine if you will wanting to "shortcut" that "washing of our hands" via a plenary indulgence! That is exactly what the RCC recommends.

So "what exactly" is "washing our hands" FOR US in the case of a Plenary indulgence - that the blood of Christ did not do "for us"??

This was already posed previously - but we should continue to expect the "details" in these direct "difficult" points to be "ignored" by our RC bretheren.

I for one am pleased that they are willing to step into an open forum and will tolerate any discussion at all. So the fact that they duck these hard questions is not all bad. There is life there yet!
