I don't think so! I think there's a big difference in minor debates of doctrine such as pre-, post-, or a- millennialism escatology verses the fundamental emphasis of the gospel message such as a man-centered verses Christ-centered gospel. Black liberation "theology" is a dangerous man-centered "gospel" and that's what's taught in Obama's church of 20 years and is revealed in his, his wife's, and his former pastor's - his trusted spiritual advisor - comments.

It's hard to reconcile any position Obama has with Christian doctrine. His is an anti-Christian stance.

Personally if we thought the doctrines at our church were false we'd be in a different church. Yet I read he gave $20,000. to them.
Not false doctrines in his opinion then. He beleives the junk they teach there.
What Obama and his wife really need is a bible so they can read the truth.

Aren't you an ambassador for Christ? What about the way you treat people here? And not just on this thread, but many threads.

Ken, with all due respect to Obama supporters here on the BB (and I mean that sincerely), I think it is at the very least NAIVE if one truly does not think that Obama's church, pastor, and black liberation theology in general would/could/should matter to us, as Christians, if we vote based on how closely a candidate matches up with Christian doctrine. If you choose NOT to vote for president, or any other elected office, based on a candidate's perceived Christian principles, that is certainly an option and your right as an American citizen. I don't believe anyone here is challenging that. In an election where there is no clear choice, based on Christian principles, one must decide how best to exercise the right to vote. You have made your choice, based on characteristics and abilities you see in Obama that you value. In my honest assessment of the man, I saw many things that I also admire--an eloquence and clear ability to garner national attention; a hopefulness; general ideas that "sound good".

The problem (for me, at least) is that Obama is inexperienced enough that there's no real "look, he did this" to use as a springboard to figure out how he'd deal with practical problems as president, and I haven't been able to find any real substance in his campaigning. It all SOUNDS good (the unity, etc.), but there's nothing concrete to back up the lofty ideas (at least that I've seen). So, in the void left by both lack of experience and of substance in practical ideas being set forth, we have little CHOICE but to look at Obama's "other history" to try to determine what he will actually bring to the table as president. I think THIS is why it matters even MORE to look at the stuff with Wright, Obama's church, and the theology which was at the very least HEARD by Obama for twenty years.

I personally assume that if I learn, for instance, that a person I meet is a member of an area church here that is almost a cult in its function--well, I assume that they believe what their church/cult leader tells them, because they continue to go there. If I have Jehovah's Witnesses knock at my door, then I make the assumption that they believe the things that are taught at their kindom hall.....because they continue to go there. I also believe this of the folks that I know that continue to go to a KJVO church in the town I moved from....since they continue to go there, I assume that they believe the stuff the pastor preaches and that their overall church doctrine espouses. Obviously, any RATIONAL person in any church will have some differing opinions and ideas that don't fully mesh with what their pastor believes, or even what the church in general holds as "sacred".

But I don't think it's such a leap to assume that Obama does indeed believe SOME of what is taught at his church--since he has continued to go there. And it's not IRrational to assume that he has been influenced by at least SOME of the teaching there, since he's been experiencing it for so very long. And I don't think it's irrational to assume that it will IN SOME WAY influence how he comports himself in ANY office (or private job, for that matter) he holds....what we believe directly impacts how we view things and how we handle things and how we attempt to work with other people. That is simply an inescapable reality of being human.

So I think that is why there is so much strongly worded feeling concerning Obama and these issues.....I personally don't hate Obama. I think he's intelligent, very capable, and very inspirational. Likewise, I think his wife is highly intelligent. But so much of what she says belies what Obama says....it just makes me think that the negativity IS there entrenched in them much more so than Obama's eloquence in prepared speeches reveals. So, what Wright has taught, what Obama's church teaches, what black liberation theology teaches DOES matter--when taken in concert with the information we have on Obama, and ESPECIALLY with the information that is absent (due to his inexperience). I'm not an Obama-basher, any more than I'm a McCain supporter....I just have to take all the information I have available to me and try to go from there....and that's what I see others doing as well. Unfortunately, we've come to different conclusions, and we've all gotten quite cross over that....and that's a shame.:tear:

I agree with the spirit of this. It is simply an oversimplification to assume that each person who attends church X believes what is taught in church X. I myself am a member of a church that I believe has gone soft on Christian doctrine (the United Church of Canada). But I stay and fight. It would be a misreading to assume that because I am in the United Church, I agree with its general teachings.

But do you disagree with the BASIC and FOUNDATIONAL Christian principles, doctrine, beliefs held by/practiced by your church? That is, is it Christ-centered? Could you stay there if it was NOT?

I think that is the problem that people who don't like Obama's staying at that church have---if he is at odds with its CORE belief system, why is he still there? Otherwise, we have to assume he is NOT at odds with the core beliefs....which are apparently NOT Christ-centered, but, rather--afro-centric.

Again? I think we've been through it already. Hopefully, you can discern the effect his beliefs would have on his adminstrative policies, his appointments, and his influence and approval or disapproval of legislation.

Don't worry about him DF, to the dawg just pointing out the error in his posts is tatamount to lying. Pointing out their untruths makes YOU the liar. Typical rightie doublespeak.

Labeling people as "haters" because they don't like your liberal hero is lying. You can hate what a man stands for without hating the man. You are the perfect example.
