What do people think of military service in relation to Christian faith? I have friends in some (other) denominations who question the morality of it, and some who outwardly maintain that violence is not for the Christian, no mater what the cause. Still others believe it's perfectly compatible with faith. Depends on your view, I guess.

    What's your own view?

Well considering God had armies for Israel...and there is no prohibition of it found within Scripture...there were Christian Centurions in the New Testament.....

No it doesn't depend on your view. It depends on Scripture and Scripture does not prohibit it in any stretch of the imagination.

But Scripture also says blessed are the peacemakers, turn the other cheek and don't resist an evildoer. I'm not trying to be contentious, just looking for a little clarity on an issue that was brought to my attention a while ago. It sure polarizes opinion.

I really admire people's confidence, surety and firmness in these matters. To me, it's not that simple.

Should a Christian commit murder for military wages? The dogs of war are beating the drums for war with Iran. They're lying about Iran and nuclear weapons. How could a follower of the Prince of Peace sign up for a military service, when that service overwhelmingly has absolutely nothing to do with the defense of the USA, but about murdering for political reasons they don't understand?

Thank you for two very different views. This is what I mean about the struggle and lack of clarity on the issue.

You need to look up the definition of murder.

My youngest son will be joining the Marines on Oct 7, so we do not see any problem with defending our nation.

Do you think I haven't? I just can't come to the same simple, easy conclusions that you appear to do.

For those who are murderers in their hearts, the decision to kill is easy. For a Christian, they'll need something more compelling than the bombing of a marine barracks in Beirut in 1983, by a Lebanese militia group during a civil war, to justify a war with Iran today. That's an actual excuse I've seen in this forum for war with Iran.

Does scripture prohibit military service? As David stated, it does not. Shootsie is not offering any meaningful dissent other than to call people murderers. That is not much of an argument, it is a parade of ignorance.

Keep in mind that there is no draft at the present time. Military service is voluntary. If an individual has a scruple about any type of violence, even in self or national defense, there are other ways they can serve their country. Many of us, myself included, chose to wear the uniform. Most of us did so with a clear conscience. I wanted to defend our nation, not murder people. Article 92 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice obligates military service members to obey all lawful orders. That means unlawful orders (i.e. the intentional murder of civilians) should be disobeyed. Luke 3:14 records Jesus' instructions to military members. He did not tell them to leave the military, He instructed them to act lawfully.

It is telling that you have not asked him that same question. I find your posts disingenuous.

A killer without just cause is a murderer. Those who want war with Iran need to have just cause. And, they haven't offered any meaningful just cause.

Self Defense is not murder and not even manslaughter but justifiable homicide.

I served during Vietnam and am proud of my service... I also felt I protected the freedoms of those who did not for some reason or were unable too... Daniel I want to direct you to a post that was started by 1689Dave in July of this year that you might find interesting, that you missed... You can't respond to the post, but just read what everyone wrote, as it is closed but you might get further insight to your question... Then feel free to start one of your own, if you so desire... Brother Glen:)
