<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR> the only words that should come out of your mouth are "Yes Sir/Maam!"

Call a Drill Sergeant "Sir" and you'll get dogged out BIGTIME! They'll tell you they work for a living. I spent 7 years enlisted in the U.S.Army.

I wasn't saved yet, but I prayed a lot during Desert Storm. I was more scared of the U.S. troops there at the port when we first got to Saudi Arabia, than the enemy. I was glad when my unit went out into the desert and into Iraq. When you get that many U.S. military members together in one place, people get very crazy.

I would recommend military service to anyone who is not rebellious at heart. If you're willing to obey and submit to the authority of people appointed over you, even if you don't like them, then you'll have no problem.

Don't be surprised if you get deployed to a war zone, it's part of the job. If you don't think you have it in you to kill somebody, don't worry, they'll train you!

One other thing, if you're not used to foul language, you're in for the shock of your life! My brother-in-law is a Christian in the Marines, he has trouble keeping his speech uncorrupted.

I guess that's a difference between Army basic training and Air Force basic training. If you don't say "yes sir" in AF basic, even though your TI is a sergeant, you're toast!

(for those that saw the question, please disregard it; as I mentioned previously, the situation I posed is merely something each individual will have to reconcile with themselves)

If we look at government as a God ordained instution, (Rom 13), one of the reposnsiblities He gave it was the protection of its subjects/citizens. When the soldiers came to John the Baptist, what did he tell them? "Be content with your wages and do no man violence." He did not tell them to get out of the army. (An impossiblity in that day without deserting, the term of service was 20 years IIRC.)
And yes Peter did cut off an ear in the garden, but, he brought the sword along at his Lord's command.

Historically, there have been two schools of thought amoungst the Baptists. The German/Continental school hold to a pacifist position. The Anglo-American school will serve under arms. Why the split? On the Continent, the military forces (during the Thirty Years War) were seen as enforcing whatever the religious faith was of the local ruler. Baptist found themselves in the middle. (I recommend "The Reformers and their Stepchildern on this point.) In England, a standing Army did not exist until the English Civil War. And then, it came to represent the triumph of Parliment over the despotism of the King. (I'll not go into this piece of PoliSci for the moment.) The same sentiment carried on through to the American Colonies.

The decision to serve is an individual one in America. Personally, I'd give serious consideration to the Coast Guard. (I'm a former Coastie.) You get the benefits of military service. But you're in a service that's not just preparing for the next war. For the Coast Guard, war is just another natural disaster. The USMC is made up of good people. But, the unofficial CG Motto is "The Book says you have to go out. It don't say anything about coming back in."

Matthew 19:17 "...there is none good but one, that is, God..."

    Sorry, I just couldn't resist! :D

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR> I'm risking getting "chewed out" here, but hey, what the heck...as Americans, aren't we allowed to assemble to worship our Heavenly Father? Aren't we allowed to pray in public? Aren't we offered freedom of religion? We didn't get those rights without fighting for them.

Those rights were purchased by the blood of brave men.

I wouldn't take back one second of my time in the Army. If you have a family, it can put a lot of strain on your marriage (especially if you're in an MOS where you get shipped around a lot). For a single person, though, it's a great experience.

Choose your MOS carefully. Being able to repair tank treads is not nearly the marketable skill that being a medic is. Also, make sure that you talk to people who are in that MOS and get their advice on the enlistment process. Never, ever, ever believe anything that a recruiter or someone at MEPS tells you.

As for basic, it's a great way to learn that you can't handle everything; but God can. You show up, you do it, and you learn that somethings are miserable but they end. It actually goes by pretty quickly. While there, remember that if you're the only one doing something, even if it's right, it's wrong. If everyone is doing it, even if it's wrong, it's right.
