    Joseph, a few points ...

1 - Seminary equips someone to preach.

2 - It doesn't necessary make him a good preacher.

3 - One does not need to necessarily associate "liberal theology" with seminary; there are plenty of liberal seminaries; there are plenty of conservative seminaries. Sorry, I have never heard of John Shelby Spong.

4 - I agree, if God has not called the person to minister and if he does not have a humble heart, he will be terrible minister -- regardless of where he went to seminary.

When people who had accepted the Lord, by way of hearing my message, begin to show up in the churches and inquire about being baptized the pastors began to ask questions. They ask questions both of the people and of me. They ask them what happened, what did he say to you? They told me, I just can't believe it, how in the world did you get the message across to this person?
Do I have an education? Yes but not in theology. Am I a pastor? No I am just a soulwinner and a sometimes street preacher.

Our present Pastor has no "formal" education, outside of primary school anyway. He is a very good preacher, friend, and example for this congregation to follow.

Our first Pastor was a highly educated Attorney. He was kicked out of the church for committing adultery.

Who was the better Pastor? This is more of a comparison with higher education in general, and not necessarily involving biblical education.

I think a lot of people see a man with a degree and think he must be very intelligent. Friends, I know of several dumb people who graduated from college. I know many more intelligent people who never attended a day of college.

Rather than looking for a degree with a man behind it, why don't we look for a man who fits the BIBLICAL qualifications of a Pastor?

Learning the scriptures is best done through prayer and meditation and training at the feet of other qualified ministers.

That is how Primitive Baptist ministers are "educated" and most are as or more knowledgable in the scriptures, and the original tongues and historical facts, as any seminary trained preacher.

If doctors were called by God to do that job, and were given all of the necessities by the moving of the Spirit to care for me, then I would have no problem seeing that doctor. Unfortunately, that ain't how you become a doctor. If it were, there would be a lot fewer illnesses and mistakes made.

It seems to be a "staw man" argument: "Would you rather have someone called by God to be your pastor OR would you rather have someone who is educated?" To me, the obvious answer is both.

Sorry, most people who are well educated REALLY ARE smarter.

There are always exceptions. I too know some smart folks who didn't finish college. It's the exception, not the rule.

Can you have wonderful pastors who aren't educated? Sure. But given a choice, why wouldn't you want someone who is?

Actually more correctly a "false dilemma" or "false dichotomy" rather than a "straw man".

Doesn't "smart" have more of a connotation relating to native intelligence?
