Previous posters post perplexing posts purporting personal preferences pertaining to previous postings of pernicious posters provoking preposterous, pompous and pretentious posts, posthaste.
...and you can quote me on that!

    Perfect!

On a serious note this thread reminds me of something I heard in a counseling course back in the day. The professor said to the effect, "If you are already thinking about the answer before the other person is still speaking - you are not listening." Well, you can 'not listen' while you're reading too.

While this is called a debate forum none of the formal rules of debate apply. Just because someone uses argumentum ad logicam ad nauseam doesn't mean there is a debate ongoing. The form typically follows:

    • OP establishes a thesis
    • Numerous respondents affirm the thesis ( with or without supporting facts)
    • Numerous respondents declare, "You're nuts! Allow me to properly educate you."
    • OP responds to defend his/her thesis
    • You're still nuts. Shut up and let me finish my lecture.
    • OP responds
    • I SAID SHUT UP STRAW MAN. I'M LECTURING HERE!
20 pages later the thread dies a natural death but not before giving birth to a handful of spin offs.

Not for nothing, the threads have become so predictable that all you need to do is read the thread title, view the participants and you'll know where the thread will end before it dies on page twenty. Maybe that's why folks get misquoted so often. Is that the punishment for breaking formula?

    This Has Been My Concern...

...for a long time, but when I post anything like what you posted, there are attacks and unChrist like comments, and accusations...so, I am trying to avoid the posts that attack.

You have hit this one out of the park, but, I do not believe it will change the ones who are guilty of doing what you say. Only the judgment will get to the root of the problem. :tear:

And, it often leaves me scratching my head.

I came to this forum (and have visited many others) seeking to learn more about God, the Bible, and what I truly believe vs what I've been "taught" over the years. Most folks here are way over my head from the get-go. That's why I'm here and using the 1828 dictionary to help decipher some of the terminology. I want to learn from God fearing folks who know much more than I do.

Click on a thread that I hope will teach me something more. When the thread finally dies.... what was that all about?

The hard part is that both parties normal see the other party as guilty and see themselves as blameless while outsiders see both sides as guilty.

Just ran across a quote that may have a bearing on this thread.

    Wisdom from Oswald Chambers

    I can agree with that!

    Let's not forget this one:

    • OP establishes a thesis.
    • Respondent doesn't address the thesis, but slings pejoratives at the OP instead.
    • OP attempts to get respondent to talk about the facts.
    • Respondent continues to sling pejoratives at the OP.

Don't forget the infamous"I will ask the OP in question, but in such a fashion that its obvious my view is right and those against are biblically ignorant/wrong!"

easy way to take ole 'cheap shots!"

Exactly. The over and over and over begging the question OP's on an anti Calvinist agenda? :love2:

Then when you go proving it's wrong out come the other useless arguments "you're not using formal debate procedures" "I've been debating since kindergarten" "begging the question" "here is a totally subjective scenario that I 'say' happens to me, and I will only allow quotes from scholars as proof I'm wrong" ...and the "oh no, I did say that and you proved it, so I am exhausted now, and I want to get off this merry-go-round" (of ones own device, mind you!)
