After the Japanese surrender General Douglas MacArthur sent this plea to Americans...

Hi, Salty. Sorry, I saw this just now. I haven't come to this neck of the BB lately because it has largely been dormant.

I've heard this story for many years, and believe it to be true. In fact, I used to have a biography of MacArthur which had the story, I believe. The problem is, the figures are often different: 2,000 missionaries, 10,000, and so on.

MacArthur thought that Japan could be reached with the Gospel post-war because they had lost and were vulnerable. This didn't happen, as one missiologist who spent ten years in Japan wrote: “When the 1940s gave way to the 1950s and my family headed to Japan, missions assumed a new aura of reality but still retained a romantic idealism. We were, after all, going to an occupied nation whose god had just abdicated and whose people were just waiting to hear the gospel and embrace the true and living God. Or, so we were told” (Paradigms in Conflict, by David Hesselgrave , p. 19)
