Ain't that a grand, informative, comprehensive analysis? Is it Peter (Matthew 16:18) or Christ (I Corinthians 10:4) you are referring to?

Hey, guys, before this thread degenerates into the usual free-for-all tirade, let's determine to be civil. Maybe Philippians will get specific. Maybe he won't. But you all know we've "been there done that" so many times before....please be careful..thanks---Daniel

    I agree, Daniel.

I respect Phillipians' right to his beliefs but do we really need another "rock is bad" thread?

No one can pove either way that it's good or bad and everyone just ends up angry with one another, anyway.

In all due respect to Phil, he/she has the right to believe this. It's a bit odd that it would be posted with no explanation but thats ok.

I was saved in a non-denominational liberal church in California. They taught me to read my Bible every day, pray every day, and to go to church every time the doors were open. After attending there for one year and a half I had come to the convictions that rock music was of the devil, that wearing swimsuits to the beach was definitely immodest, and that men should have short hair. Since this is about rock music I will share about that. I was invited to go to an Assembly of God church where for two Wednesday nights they were not preaching, but having a movie for teens. The movie was why secular rock music was wrong. They showed lots of proof like what rock music does to plants and how it is against nature. They also talked about the lives of the rock singers. Well, I went back for the second part of the movie although none of my friends did. After leaving, I got into my car and realized that all the same arguments you can make against secular rock music can apply to Christian rock music. Since I had never in my life heard any preacher preach against Christian rock music I thought I was the only one in the whole world that knew it was wrong. The church I was saved in and had been going to used Christian rock music in all their church services to attract teenagers. That very moment in my car I took out the Christian Rock music I had and threw it all away. I asked God to show me which church to go to by sending someone to invite me to their chuch. That very week some people came to my work and invited me to the only independent fundamental Baptist church in my area. I have been an IFB since and the reason I have the convictions I do, is not because a pastor told them to me, but because I listened to the Holy Spirit speak to my heart and convict me of sin. By the way - while I was in the other church the Holy Spirit also spoke to my heart about pants on women, no unchaparoned dating, no touching before marriage, and only one Bible in each language. I know a lot of people will disagree, but that is fine. This is just my personal opinion. [IMG]

    Missionary,

If you read any of my posts you'll figure out quickly that I definately disagree with you on all the issues presented, however as you stated these are your personal convictions and you are very much entitled to them. ;)

Our church preaches against it and I agree. It is no good, and I have no use for it.
I once was a heavy metal drummer, playing in a band. It was not so much the lyrics as it was the beat and rythm that basicly hypnotized me every time I played. My bands members would tell me how they would see my eyes roll back in my head sometimes. I would just be lost in the music. After I got saved I realized all of it is no good. The Bible says to sing unto yourself in psalms and spiritual songs. Eph. 5:19 "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;"
Any way just wanted to say I agree with you.

Where is the Biblical referances that it is evil? Where do you draw the line?

What about Southern Gospel Music? with it's roots in Honky Tonk bars and worldy Country music? Southern Gospel is actually Contemporary music that is nothing but Country music with Christian lyrics.

The only alternative is apparently accappela music or Classical Sacred music such as Bach, Handel if we trash all popular Gospel music.

I think a large part of the problem is that people are exposed to the worst in music, and then generalize their convictions to rule out as much as possible, One person has aparently no dealing in the music, but sees and hears a bunch of bad stuff, (ususally with an emphasis on the gross excesses, such as the drugs, deaths, etc). The other person was himself involved in hard forms of rock, in which whatever wild or hypnotic effect might be present, is magnified to the fullest extent. People then think that there is some universal divine principle about beats or styles, with the most plainest styles turned to as the "safe" alternative for Christians. Th harshest critics of CCM are those who rebelled in their youth and got involved in the secular scene with the heaviest sound, and all the drugs.
But at least one of you admits it's your opinion. The Bible tells us to deal with this issue by listening to and respecting each others' convictions.

    MTM,

I love Classical also [IMG] but I still haven't seen a valid scriptural argument to prove CCM evil. Most of the harshest critics of CCM are Baptists who are Southern Gospel fans which ruins their arguments. I do appreciate your consistency.

I agree it is hard to draw a line, but there must be one drawn. Take sin for instance. Now not many churches are going to deny membership to someone just because he/she smokes ciggerates, though they are not good and should be preached against also. But most churches would deny membership to someone who is living with thier conpanion not being married. We must draw a line somewhere.

It doesn't answer the question. If it is evil it must be proven by scripture and not by one's life experiance or personal taste. I have never read a scripture that condemns a form of music.

Personaly I can't stand to listen to Rap music or Blue Grass music but that doesn't make them evil.

If we condemn Christian Rock then Southern Gospel must also be condemned as worldly in that they both have their roots in popular music.

These have been fascinating posts, folks. In fact, there have been some particularly thought-provoking items raised--particularly the one about Southern Gospel. I have been a full-time Minister of Music in independent Baptist churches for almost 19 years. I am also a private music instructor. God has also allowed me to minister in many different concert venues from coast to coast. I am 40 years old and have a teenage daughter and a nine year old son. With all that background painted for you, I can say that I have come to the conclusion that there are NO SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS ABOUT MUSIC STYLES IN THE BIBLE. They can't be found. You can only determine principles of what YOU or YOUR CHURCH will allow in your sphere or worship and influence. Some are cautious to use very little CCM because it is too much like the worldly counterparts. So, the issue is complicated and challenging. I will post more later. I have to run for now....

I have never read a scripture that condemns selling marijuana but I get the feeling it's wrong.
    Just a thought.

    God speed.

It seems to me that this is much like the man that is smoking and trying to justify why it is ok for him to smoke.
